May News
We spent the last month in recovery and getting the shelter and the dogs back to normal. We were able to get some dogs adopted which gives us the space to continue to be able to rescue.
Jessica writes about how we try to decide which dogs that we are able to rescue. We get many emails, PM, Whatsapp every day about different dogs all over the bay. There is also the option of supporting an animal you choose to rescue. We currently have Santo whose bill are being covered by a lady waiting to adopt him.
Also this month, Johanna Denesiuk has written a great article about massage and your best friend. Something to add to your bonding experiences with your dog. She also wrote a great story about rescuing a little guy named George.
The dogs that are currently in protocols (vaccinations and sterilization), as well as those that are ready for adoption, are listed in our Adoptable Facebook Album.
Also, we continue to keep you informed on our financial status this month, our wonderful donors, rescues, and adoptions.
Keep watching for our monthly newsletter to update you on all things A Dog's New Life. Share with your friends if you think they might be interested in what we are accomplishing here in Bucerias, Mexico.
Thank you

How do we decide who to rescue?
As many of you know Mexico, in general, has a big problem of strays. We rescue the dogs that are injured or need medical care or the ones that are lost and disoriented that won't be able to survive to the cars in the avenues.
The Municipal Police periodically contact us to take possession of a dog being neglected or mistreated.
We also help our community keep their dogs that require medical treatment they cannot afford. But they do love their dog and want to keep him or her.
We are hoping to start our street program which would vaccinate strays in good health and also dogs with owners that can't afford the vaccines and other medications.

The Magic of Massage!
Just think back to the last time you had a massage. The endorphins were flowing and you relished that “in the zone” peaceful interlude; now, picture giving that experience to your best friend.
This may be a novel idea to many, but just think about how your dog reacts when you scratch her ears or rub her belly. Think of taking that to a new level. Massaging your dog has many advantages:
- Reduces stress
- Improves health and circulation
- Reduces pain
- Reduces tension in injured areas
You may want to introduce your dog to massage slowly. When you are watching TV, and Perro is lying next to you, begin to stroke his body to familiarize him with your touch. You can use a light touch, to begin with, slowly moving from one body part to another. If paws or other parts are sensitive, move away and come back again with a short intermittent touch, moving away before a reaction. Your dog will soon relax and enjoy the attention. You may begin with this short introduction and then extend the period.
As you begin to explore your dog’s body, you will notice small nodules or areas of tension. Most dogs have those near the shoulder and hips ( a lot like us humans). Massage those areas with a circular motion. Your pet will let you know if your touch is uncomfortable and you should respond with a lighter touch, moving to another area, and reassuring your dog with a soft, comforting voice. Pay close attention to your dog and their body language, to guide you. As your pet begins to realize that this is a pleasurable touch they will relax into it.
Incorporating massage into your care routines will help familiarizes your dog to your touch in even sensitive areas. This can be helpful in alerting you to problem areas that may require a vet’s attention and also be helpful should you need to attend to those areas for medical reasons.
An added benefit is that these sessions will build trust and a deeper bond with your best friend.

The new therapy pool is finally up and running. With the distemper situation of the last month or so, the pool was not a priority. However, we now had the time to put it together and get it ready to go. Rocky was the first pup to dip a paw into our new therapy pool.
Rocky just had surgery on his hip and the pool will help him to build muscle strength so he can start putting weight on his leg as he hasn't been using it in quite a while.
We also want to thank all of the donors who sent money for us to be able to purchase this vital bit of the recovery equipment.

Synchronicity - A Story of Rescue

Synchronicity?
As we were leaving movie night at the marina a little dog was running scared by our car. We stopped and picked him up. There was no one looking for him and we brought him home. After de-matting, de-burring, de-fleaing, and bathing, he settled in to wait for someone to claim him.
On Sunday, with George still a houseguest, Gilles and I went off to the marina to volunteer a stint for A Dog's New Life, sitting at their booth at the La Cruz Market. It was incredibly windy and stuff was flying everywhere. While Gilles was doing a solo stint, Lara (a stranger at the time) walked by intent on reaching another booth. The moment that she was in front of the ADNL booth, yet another item blew off the table. She kindly stopped and picked it up. As she returned it, Gilles began a conversation with her and she began to tell him her story.
On Thursday night she and her husband had been out with their elderly terrier who was not faring well with the heat. Hubby was to take him back to the US to stay with a daughter the following Saturday. Lara and hubby live on their boat, moored off La Cruz. They had been to the La Cruz Inn and spotted a terrier that looked similar to their elderly one. Although they had seen him around before and felt drawn to him, their elderly dog was having no part of an interloper.
As they made their way back to their dinghy, this new terrier followed them and even jumped in the water as they left shore. They rescued the little guy and put him back onshore for safety reasons with the older dog. That scene haunted them, and it motivated them to roam the streets each day, in search of this little terrier.
After hearing this story, Gilles told her our story of rescuing a little terrier. At that point, I came back and showed her a picture I had of George. She immediately brightened. That's him!!! Within hours, Lara had purchased a collar and found her way to our home. As she came through the door, George was all over her as if it was a homecoming.
There was no question he remembered her and had found his person!
All of the pieces that had to come together for this reunion to take place? Incredible!
Someone just told me, "Everyone comes into your life for a reason, a season, or a lifetime." I think we came into George's life for a reason.
