Wherever you may live - southern or northern hemispheres - we wish you a happy change of seasons, surrounded by beauty-budding-spring or glorious colour transforming autumn. The common constant, however, is always 'change'.

Ah, change! Vital, inevitable and sometimes scary, and chaotic, yet often transformational and a stepping stone onto the next story, project and creative expression.

Change is often linked to experimenting.

Jean wanted to re-work a jigsaw rabbit she painted in 1977 when she lived in South Korea. See the miniature in the lower left corner.

Jean’s final pattern-filled drawing is in the upper right corner.
Although the painting is filled with great designs, it didn’t turn out quite like Jean imagined as she went overboard with the details and the combination of colours.
The original had more empty spaces, portraying a lighter and more dreamy effect.

This artwork is, however, a creative stepping stone and a nostalgic trip down memory lane reminding Jean of her love of round shapes containing plants and flowers creating a jungle-like density.

And sometimes change brings a creative evolution.
The Chaekkori screens that were painted during the Korean Choson Dynasty (1392-1910) and later in Korean folk art were still-life paintings of the scholar’s books, utensils (ink stone, ink stick, brush and paper), furniture and favourite things.
The scholar’s Cheakkori was also about “seeking truth and loving beauty.” Over the years Jean has created her own style of joyful collections.

Here she’s painting ‘Chaekkori panel III’ with her beloved dogs on blue and white batik cushions, tulips in a Venetian vase, miniatures of some of her favourite paintings and a Japanese kimono chest of drawers next to Bettina the Rabbit, creator of botanical gardens.

Here is another Chaekkori painting created in 1979 during Jean’s time in Hong Kong.

Change can also be seen with regard to those things that we focus on and what we consider to be important.

For us, with a change in focus regarding ‘Jean Tori Design’ comes a change in direction.

We are designing a new website that is simpler and more focused on creative content, process and inspiration.

And when it comes to working on your artwork, change can also bring improvements.

“But remember,” as Jean advises, “when you start improving on the improvement, then it’s time to stop.

There even comes a time when you have to go back to the very beginning.”

Alongside all these elements of change, including the seasons, are endings that create new beginnings.

It is a continuous cycle, often providing new perspectives, including one where Bettina the Rabbit takes on a new pose in a pop-up card wishing everyone a very happy Easter!
