In truth, closing-down-company admin is no fun, and needs to be balanced with images that inspire and make us smile.

Joy is always a better base for creativity. So, let’s put aside the paperwork for a moment and talk about artistic inspiration, and ducks.

Jean loves to paint birds of all sizes, types and shapes. Jean’s love of ducks skyrocketed in Asia watching them being herded, much like sheep, by the duck farmers to the rice paddies.

Still to this day ducks are a natural way to remove insects and weeds, rather than using pesticide. Feathered hard workers decorated with infinite patterns and colour combinations too.
When it comes to inspiration, it’s conducive to think of things that you love to watch and observe.

What directs your mind to a state of play and fun?

For Jean, ducks are joyful. Especially frolicking in graphic design waves amongst lotus flowers and lily pads.
Inspiration also emerged this month via a re-visitation of one of Jean’s favourite paintings. She recreated a cat on a beach watching fish in the sea.

This was a view we had while eating a seafood dinner sitting on wooden boxes on a beach in Sri Lanka, decades ago.

Of course, Jean’s painting style of ‘stacking’ elements as a form of perspective forces your imagination to be flexible (re-fish).

Whatever your style, some views provide an abundance of inspiration (Monet painted his favourite lily pads about 300 times).

Sometimes what inspires us can simply be a cloud formation up in the sky.

And how those clouds might be transformed into a landscape.

Here’s a detail from Jean’s revisited painting, “Umbrian Mountains and Castles II” and her version of a geometric cloud bank against the hills.

Creating whimsical stories, in other words playing, also gets the inspiration flowing.

I found this collage and quirky poem from when we were first coming up with ideas for our children’s books.

Allowing ourselves to be unconventional and playful opened up a whole world of fun characters.

Whether you’re revisiting favourite paintings, views and memories, or finding inspiration in the things that you love and bring you joy, or imagining playful stories just for fun, we wish you much creativity!

Now, back to the paperwork, but with a reminder to go out and explore, and possibly find some ducks!
