North West Norfolk News
by James Wild MP

The backdrop to the changes announced by the Prime Minister of moving to Medium, High, and Very High risk Covid Alert levels is the quadrupling of cases across the country in the last three weeks – primarily in the North East and North West.

While rates in West Norfolk mean we are at medium risk, case numbers have been increasing. Announcements about higher levels in some areas shows that this is a fast-moving situation, so let’s remain vigilant. I certainly want to avoid a second national lockdown and an approach targeted on areas where transmission is increasing offers a way to do that.

Last Friday I joined students being put through their paces at the Constructionarium. They arrive having only been used to textbook learning and have a week to build a replica of an iconic building such as the Gherkin. Despite wet weather, the course had sparked their enthusiasm - many who previously had not considered roles on the practical side of construction were re-thinking this assumption. Maintaining West Norfolk’s construction centre of excellence with the National Construction College is important to our area and developing the skills so vital to deliver major construction programmes as we move towards net zero.

This week I took part in an All Party Group on Autism session to improve understanding of autism. This was led by Leo, who is autistic, and he explained the challenges that autistic people can often face from in public settings and steps we can all take to help. The West Norfolk branch of the National Autistic Society supports over 350 families across the area. The overarching message from Leo was simple and one we can all get behind – Be Kind.

Please do get in touch if I can be of assistance.

Best wishes,

Last week I met students from the University of Southampton who were taking part in the Constructionarium's engineering course in Great Bircham.

Constructionarium provides hands on experience for students. I was impressed by the innovative approach, which takes the theory from textbooks and turns it into reality through actually building projects.
