This month, while society focuses on Valentine’s Day and the act of loving another person, I want to shift the focus to loving yourself because only when you truly love yourself can you then love another. The practice of self-love is a beautiful, essential and complex journey that each of us are experiencing in our own time. When I think of self-love, the words nourishment, safety, trust, courage, self-acceptance, love, growth and worthiness come to mind and these are all pieces to the puzzle of self-love for me. In recent years I have been learning how to fit these pieces together so that I can create a picture of how to love myself wholly and unconditionally.

The practice of self-love involves taking care of yourself and I mean more than just meeting your basic needs to survive and get by day-to-day. Self-love involves deeply nourishing, caring and loving yourself and your body. I find that many of us feel guilty about indulging in self-care but today I am reminding you that self-care is not selfish. It’s about taking responsibility for your needs and desires and creating a life that allows you to do so. We all get caught up in the go-go-go fast paced lifestyle but when was the last time you stopped and thought, “What is one thing I can do today to take care of myself, to replenish my spirit and come back to my center?"


                                       

The journey of loving yourself isn’t all rainbows, puppies and sunshine trust me I know. It can be difficult and uncomfortable to accept all aspects of yourself, especially the dark parts that we don’t want to acknowledge. Self-love is the practice of making the time to hold and listen to these broken parts of us that need our love the most. When we let down our inner walls of resistance and allow our self-hatred, negative self-talk and judgments about ourselves that have been ingrained into our being and psyche for so many years be freed and released, we allow forgiveness, acceptance and unconditional love to wash over us. 

This all takes practice as I am still learning everyday right along with you! This month I want to give you a self-love toolbox you can dip into anytime you feel you need support and inspiration on this journey. So set boundaries, make a commitment to yourself and get excited about exercising this new “muscle” to find how you can love yourself in every moment. Today (and everyday) let’s fall in love with taking care of ourselves - our whole self - mind body and spirit. 

30 Day Self-Love Adventure

For the next 30 days (and beyond) when you wake up in the morning, choose a self-care activity from the list below that resonates with you and do it! And have fun taking care of your mind, body and soul ~ you are worthy and deserving of it. This is just a list to get you started and spark inspiration, feel free to think outside the box and find what nourishes YOU. 

  • Cook a yummy healthy meal and eat by candlelight - make sure to have a dance party to your favorite tunes while cooking! 
  • Make a list of all the things you are grateful for 
  • De-clutter a room - as Marie Kondo says, "find what sparks your joy" :) 
  • Go for a walk outside and let the sunshine and sounds of nature rejuvenate you 
  • Enjoy a long hot bubble bath or shower by candlelight followed by a nourishing face mask
  • Write 10 things you love about yourself on a piece of pretty paper
  • Take a break from social media for a whole day
  • Listen to an inspiring TED talk or podcast 
  • Go to a park for a picnic and swing on the swing set 
  • Let your inner child come out to play by coloring with crayons 
  • Take a solo day trip to somewhere you haven’t been
                    
  • Spend the day at a museum or art gallery 
  • Wake up early to watch the sunrise 
  • Buy yourself a bouquet of flowers 
  • Stretch, stretch and stretch some more 
  • Get back into your hobbies or start a new one 
  • Drink more water and try adding fruit or cucumber for even more hydration
  • Journal about the last time you felt joyful ~ what  were you doing, what were you wearing, get into the details!
  • Have a game night or a movie marathon 
  • Look at yourself in the mirror and say “I love you” aloud
  • Repeat a positive affirmation throughout the day 
  • Reconnect with a friend you haven’t talked to in a while 
  • Write down 10 things you are proud of 
  • Put on an apron and bake your favorite dessert 
  • Sleep in, rest and nap as much as you need 
  • Have a dance party 
  • Take a drive, roll the windows down and sing your favorite songs 
  • Make a cup of tea and snuggle up with a book and a cozy blanket 
  • Write down one thing you need to forgive yourself for

Love Yourself First 
Your self-love ritual for this month is to have a self-care spa day! Take time to indulge in relaxation, rejuvenation and energetic cleansing and let the world melt away ~ this time is just for you. 
  • Put a “Do Not Disturb: Self-Love in Progess” sign  on the bathroom door
  • Fill your bathroom with candles & light your favorite incense
  • Play your favorite relaxing, dreamy Spotify playlist
  • Dry brush your body to stimulate lymphatic flow & detoxification
  • Place several tumbled rose quartz crystals in the bath to infuse the water with the energy of unconditional LOVE and emotional healing
  • Add 2 cups of Epsom salt to the bath and 6-10 drops of an essential oil such as Lavender, Frankincense or Sandalwood and I also like to add Vanilla
