Who's this guy??   Ordering the Stan book, a new film about the Stan, remembering Marty Blake and much more!

Dear <<First Name>>,

It's summer and here's what's happening on StanislausRiver.org!
First off, the top photo is an incredible find - Arnold Schwarzenegger on the Stanislaus in maybe 1975, in his bodybuilder days, before becoming California's governor. If you know about this trip and photo, let us know!  And by the way, learn who the adorable kid above is

Missed out on the Stanislaus book? Order now!

If you WANT the 40 page 11"x13" Stanislaus book, here's how you can order (to keep the price affordable, we have to group our orders, so it can take a few weeks to get the right number of orders).

Other news and information

  • Stanislaus River Museum creator Marty Blake passed away in May 2022 - his archive includes hundreds of framed photos/collages and much more. We're going through them to bring more items into the web site, and we'll post more about Marty soon.
  • New material on the website (check out the first three pages, and more) - including hair-raising scenes of the January 1980 flood; some amazing images of the 1974 Row for the River (full story in development, see image at top, too); the story behind Sierra Club Rapid, at last; a bare-knuckle look at Congressman John Garamendi's 1980s role in helping flood the Stanislaus; and much more.

So, don't wait – start exploring!   Don't forget the new River Log, and the Timeline.

Reclaiming the Stanislaus River - film and organization

Sue Knapp has been an advocate for the river for decades, having first been involved with the 1979 Stanislaus wildlife rescue project (see more here.)  For the past couple years, she's worked on a film script to tell the story of the Stanislaus, with a hopeful message.

She has now set up a nonprofit which she describes as:  "We’re supporting the film and have set out to make that fictional film come true through a new nonprofit, Restoring the Stanislaus River. Our first goals focus on causing the reduction of the New Melones Dam and then restoring our river."

There's a Facebook group and a newsletter you can check into - head over to their website and learn more!  (Note: their work and the StanislausRiver.org archive are separate but complementary). Some of the thinking about restoration of the river can be better understood here

What's coming NEXT?

By fall 2022:
  • (We've been delayed on this, but still coming!)  A redesigned home page for StanislausRiver.org, with better navigation for audiences, and development of the long-planned STORIES section of the website, where amazing tales can be told and viewed
  • A 70 page digital atlas of the river - images from a 1979 helicopter flight upriver, showing every section of the river - a great complement to the Down the Stanislaus book.
  • More new photos and videos - from Marty Blake, Ron Pickup, Jeff Nixon and many more. Got Stan photos??  Let us know!
Stay tuned, new content goes up on the Explore page frequently!
