Dear friends and supporters,

March marked one year since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic. As our team reflected on the past 365 days, the themes of perseverance, tenacity, struggle and hope were all top of mind. The shelter was able to adhere to many layers of mandatory health measures and the team and clients came together like never before to support each other as we navigated uncharted territory. WCS has remained open, available, and safe for anyone experiencing crisis or abuse.

I wanted to share this with you because as supporters of the shelter, your commitment to our vision of a safe and secure community without abuse provided our team with the courage, strength and determination to continue to do this work. Thank you for sharing in our vision.

While vaccine programs continue to role out we know that Covid-19 is not over yet and continues to create challenges for individuals and families who may not be safe at home. If you or someone you know is not safe because of abuse, please reach out for support, by calling our crisis line 1-877-934-6634.

A letter from a front line worker at WCS

As a front line employee working during this pandemic, I can say there have been struggles, but being able to support individuals and families in need has made those struggles worth it. Seeing client’s growth during their stay in shelter has been rewarding and humbling. In shelter we take Covid-19 restrictions very seriously and ask individuals and families to take these restrictions seriously as well. We strive to work with clients during this pandemic and will continue to do so. The need for safety never stops and neither does our team and the work being done at WCS.

If you or anyone you know who is experiencing domestic violence or family abuse, we also have our crisis line which is a 24 hour service. We encourage anyone seeking support or that has questions to make that phone call to our shelter. We acknowledge during this pandemic issues can arise in families which make it harder for people to call. If you know anyone who is experiencing domestic violence, the best thing you can do is be supportive.

Thank you again from a front line worker and the staff at Wheatland Crisis Society.
We at the shelter would like to say thank you to everyone in our community who has been supportive and has continued to donate during the pandemic. Your donations have not gone unnoticed and are greatly appreciated. For individuals or families who are fleeing violence, when they enter the shelter and are given comfort items it truly creates a sense of warmth and welcome.  None of this would be possible if our community did not donate to our shelter. So again, we say thank you.

Thank you to Landor Technology who recently donated 10 tickets to this amazing International Womens' Day virtual event hosted by S.T.A.N.D ASA. Our clients and some staff were able to log in for multiple workshops focusing on self care, empowerment and healing.

At WCS we value a gender equal world and practice this framework in every aspect of our work. For International Women's' Day this year, we celebrated with our residential families in shelter with fun activities and self care practices. We came together and had a community lunch (properly physically distanced of course). Staff and clients spoke about their experiences and how everyone should value each other and how we can continue to focus on creating a gender equal world.
