Issue #20 - February 20, 2019
Hope you all are having a great week!

Check out the Deconstruct Conf speaking opportunity below. I've never seen a CFP that's only for newbie speakers before.
What's on my mind this week
  • Everything
  • Nothing
  • But also, for those of you just starting out in tech, do you know what your tech career path is going to be like? Have you thought about it? Some people just want to achieve the title of "senior". Or some might want to be team leads/managers. Or maybe you want to switch professions, while staying in tech, like going from a developer to a UX designer. Or maybe you just want to do what you're doing now for as long as you can. I'm still not 100% sure what I want for my career in the next few years. But I'm pretty sure I don't want to be in a lead/management role. And because I get bored so easily, it's possible that I won't always be primarily a developer. What about you?
Things to read on the commute.
The State of Remote Work - 2019 | Buffer
"How remote workers from around the world feel about remote work, the benefits and struggles that come along with it, and what it’s like to be a remote worker in 2019."

How should self driving cars choose who not to kill? | Morgan Meaker
This question "prompted Jean-François Bonnefon, Azim Shariff, and Iyad Rahwan to design an online quiz called The Moral Machine. Would you run over a man or a woman? An adult or a child? A dog or a human? A group or an individual?" Morgan Meaker interviewed the authors of this quiz, and asked about what they found from the results so far.

The controversy surrounding OpenAI's GPT-2 | Ryan Lowe
OpenAI's GPT-2 is so good at generating realistic/human-quality text that they're not releasing the trained model, due to concerns about how it can be misused. Ryan Lowe writes about the research and the controversy surrounding the model.

Should I accept coding challenges for a potential job? | Spiro Floropoulos
Is it possible to just say "no" to a coding challenge? Maybe. They suck, and they usually don't pay. And people are busy. Applying for jobs takes enough time already. Along with whiteboarding interviews and ridiculous algorithm challenges, I wouldn't mind seeing unpaid coding challenges disappear from the tech interview process.

Deconstruct Conf CFP - ONLY for newbie speakers! | Seattle, July 11-12
Please apply to this! I'm begging you. I mean, what other conference opens up a CFP that's only available to people who have never spoken before? I think that's awesome. Plus, they'll cover your travel and give you $2000 to speak. They are especially interested in people from underrepresented groups, but anyone can apply. People outside the US may apply as well. The deadline is March 31st.

Global Diversity CFP Day | March 2nd, Worldwide
If you've never spoken at a conference before, but you want to apply to the amazing opportunity above, check out this event. Local workshops will be held around the world to help new speakers prepare for their first conference talks.

"MicroConf is the world's biggest conference for the world's smallest self-funded software companies.
