Greetings Sorors!

As the 2018-2019 Sorority year wraps to an end - Gamma Pi Sigma is still striving to ensure that our service to Milwaukee has great impact and strong ties to the communities we live and work. Just yesterday our Swim 1922 service event - spearheaded by Soror Courtney Brooks - provided a platform for youth ages 1-19 an opportunity to learn about how to be safe in the water this summer. Sigma Gamma Rho's partnership with USA Swimming becomes a vital initiative that helps us address an epidemic of children of color drowning due to lack of education about water safety. How exciting for Gamma Pi Sigma to kick off the summer by doing work that has such a relevant focus this time of the year. Next week we will host our annual Sigma Legacy Scholarship Luncheon where we award rising college students with monetary scholarships to help them along the way in their journey of higher learning. We understand the necessary assistance and support that is needed to ensure that young men and women need to pursue their dreams of higher education. As you know from this monthly newsletter and our social media presence - these past 2 weeks are a reflection of our work all year long. #WeAreGPS has been our motto to remind us that everything that we do is to uplift the brand of Sigma and to be a beacon of light in the city.

As Basileus for Gamma Pi Sigma, I am so very proud of our chapter service and growth. This year we have focused on playing the true part of a sister. With the many life happenings that we all face as women, it is a blessing to be able to lean on one another for support and for the love of sisterhood. We have bonded together during the loss of immediate family, through various personal health challenges, through the aging of our own parents, and in the moments of great personal achievement of our goals. As we look ahead to the new sorority year, we welcome the growth of our numbers and the growth of our outreach in Milwaukee. There is so much more to accomplish - together.
July 1st begins the 2019-2020 sorority year and we are just 2 years away from celebrating 100 years of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. Gamma Pi Sigma continues to pursue excellence that exemplifies the legacy of our 7 founders. I personally invite you to consider reactivating TODAY so that we can welcome you back home to Sigma and to help us rePRHOsent the blue in gold in Wisconsin. We need your gifts to make next year better than ever.

In Sisterhood,
Basileus Bridget Robinson

Soror Spotlight...

Soror Tawanda Frazier
  1. When and where were you inducted into SGRHO?
I was inducted into Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. through the Eta Z
eta chapter at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee on November 25, 1995.
. What is your educational and professional background?
I received my Bachelor of Science degree in Organizational Communications, but I currently work as a licensed insurance agent.

3. Why did you join SGRHO?
I joined SGRHO because I was looking for a family connection and I had no sisters. I also wanted to be a part of something that was different; at that time Sgrho’s stood out.
4. Have you ever held an office in SGRHO?
Yes, in GPS I was the Anti-Grammateus and now I’m the Chaplain and Philo Advisor.
5. Did you hold an office as an undergrad Soror?
Yes, as an undergraduate I served as the Basileus and the Anti-Grammateus as well as the Epistoleus.
5. Have you ever been inactive? If so, what inspired you to reactivate and continue being an active member of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc.?
Yes, when I had my first child in 2003 I went inactive and returned in 2014 (I returned because I was hustled by Lacritia Spence LOL). On a more serious note, I returned because I felt the time was appropriate. I wanted to make a difference by sharing my gifts with others.
6. What would you share with inactive Sorors about your experience of being a UG member vs. being a Graduate member?
As a UG you have more liberties, where you have the opportunity to experience SGRHO. As a Graduate member, we have more responsibilities as wives, mothers and working women.
7. What’s the hardest lesson you’ve learned?
The hardest lesson I have learned is I can’t do everything and I have to find the one thing that I do well.
8. What shows are you into?
I LOVE Criminal Minds, CSI, Law & Order, any Marvel comic shows and cooking shows.
10. How do you relax after a hard day of work?
I relax with a glass of wine and a book.
11. What’s your favorite ’90s jam?
My favorite ’90 jam is La Di Da Di by Slick Rick and Doug E. Fresh.
12. What’s your favorite quote or scripture?
My favorite scripture is Hebrews 10:23: "Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful".
13. Any encouraging words to share?
My mom used to say, never stress the things you can’t control.
