January 2019 Issue
Greetings Sorors,

Happy New Year! I pray your 2019 is off to a great start. Did you make any New Year's resolutions? I didn't, but I am excited for greater and growth in all areas of my life this year.

The new year should inspire us to define our new goals, to motivate us to make new commitments, and encourage us to live up to our promise. Whatever that promise may be and to whomever we make the promise to...make it measurable, intentional and impactful.

With 2018 in our rearview mirrors, I am reminded of the saying "leave the past in the past", but I'd be remiss to overlook all the accomplishments of Gamma Pi Sigma this past year. In 2018 we reclaimed sorors, welcomed new sorors into the fold and maintained more than 80% of our membership. Our Affiliates saw steady growth in their membership and more diversified programming and activities as well.

We thank you for all of your support and look forward to spending more time with you in 2019.

Until then...Keep reading.

In Sisterhood and Service,

Soror Tanya E. Jefferson, Anti-Basileus

Soror Spotlight...

Soror Twyla James
1. When and where were you inducted into SGRHO?
  • I was inducted Spring 1981, Theta Alpha Chapter - University of Wisconsin - Oshkosh
2. What is your educational and professional background?
  • I have been working as a Registered Nurse since 1985 and recently received my MSN in December 2018.
3. Why did you join SGRHO?
  • My friends on campus were women of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc.
4. Have you ever held an office in the sorority? If so, what office did you hold?
  • I have never held an office within Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, but I am also a member of a nursing sorority, Chi Eta Phi, where I serve as the Grammateus.
5. Have you ever been inactive? If so, what year did you become inactive?
  • Yes, I became inactive in 1987.
6. When did you reactivate? Who/What convinced you to reactivate?
  • I reactivated in December 2017. I attended an event on the campus of Marquette University where I ran into undergraduate sorors and I shared my desire to be active again. They connected me with a soror from Gamma Pi Sigma, where I was able to reactivate.
7. After being inactive, how was your transition back to being active with GPS?
  • My transition back was good. I have joined a few committees and plan to be more active with chapter events now that I have graduated.
  • The Sorors in the chapter have been very helpful supportive and welcoming.
8. What advice would you give inactive Sorors thinking of reactivating?
  • I would encourage them to give back and support the chapter by being a role model to women of color who need someone to look up to.
9. Throughout your Sigma years, have you ever attended a Regional or Boule conference? If yes, tell us about that experience.
  • Yes, I attended the 2018 Boule Conference in Dallas, Texas. It was my first Boule Conference ever since reactivating with GPS. It was awesome! I really enjoyed the experience and attending the plenary sessions, but the rooms were too cold.
  • I loved seeing so many educated women of color together, especially in our official sorority blazer.
10. What was the last thing you watched on TV?
  • I am a Lifetime Movie junkie, so I watch quite a few movies on that channel.
11. What hobby would you get into if time and money weren’t an issue?
  • I love the outdoors, so I would travel and hike in the Utah mountains.
12. If you could choose one song to play every time you walked into a room for the rest of your life, what would it be?
  • My song would be, The Champion, by Carrie Underwood ft. Ludacris.
