Over a month ago, Walnut Gardens Congregation met the refugee family they're co-sponsoring at the airport—a family of seven, ages 4 to 84, from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Twenty-six years ago, the family fled their home in the Congo, due to violence. Since that time, they have lived in a refugee camp in Rwanda; five of the family members were born there. They arrived in the U.S. with only eight suitcases. Walnut Gardens, in co-sponsorship with Della Lamb Community Services, has helped furnish the family’s home, donated household essentials, stocked the cabinets, and provided a welcome meal. In addition, they have begun a 6-month commitment with volunteer teams for Welcome & Housing, Education, Cultural Adjustment, Health, Fundraising, Transportation, Employment, and Finance. Collectively the team of congregational volunteers is giving significant time each week as they help the family adjust and meet their goals. Individuals or congregations interested in becoming involved in refugee ministry can contact the mission center coordinator, Larrene Hagaman, larreneh@gmail.com.
