APA Central Section Board Feature,
Jennifer Clark

The 2020-2021 Central Section Director is Jennifer Clark, AICP.  Jennifer is the Planning & Development Director for the City of Fresno where she has served for seven years.  Prior to Fresno, she served four public agencies for over 20 years in the states of Texas, Georgia, and Missouri with emphasis areas in economic and community development, affordable housing, as well as city planning and building.

The Central Section of APA California covers a vast 11 county region encompassing Fresno, Inyo, Kern, Kings, Madera, Mariposa, Merced, Mono, Stanislaus, Tulare, and Tuolumne Counties.

With its vast geographical range, the Section is challenged with meaningful engagement with members.  The current pandemic has provided more opportunities for the Section to embrace virtual technology to bridge this physical separation.  Providing new content to members including AICP readiness seminars and application assistance, continuing education credits, and upcoming social events and a book club, the virtual tools at our disposal will greatly shrink the distances.  Now planners from across the section can get to know each other through these forums and build connections previously unrealizable.  The Section hopes to become a virtual hub for planners to engage, connect, and learn across the miles without leaving their homes or desks.

This is a great time to become involved in the Central Section.  In 2023, the California Chapter will celebrate its 75th anniversary at the state conference in Fresno. We will need all hands on deck for this event! So please start by engaging with us through virtual and in-person events, or reaching out to any of our Board members. Connect through our social media.  Volunteer to hold Section positions. Get involved!

We are honored for the opportunity to serve the Central Section as Diversity & Equity Co-Chairs and are looking forward to collaborating with fellow members to help our communities grow with equity at the forefront.

We first ask for your input in completing this short survey, which will help us know what tools and resources we can provide to help you increase diversity, establish inclusive processes, and achieve equitable outcomes for your community.

New Membership Chair

The APA Central Section is excited to announce a new member to our Board, Jenna Chilingerian, MCRP.

Jenna serves as an associate planner at Precision Civil Engineering in downtown Fresno, CA, bringing more than seven years of experience in planning, community and economic development, and program management in the nonprofit and public sectors. She received her Masters of Community and Regional Planning from the University of Oregon in June 2020 and is excited to return to her home region of the San Joaquin Valley to contribute to creating more efficient, accessible, and equitable land use policies and planning processes in many of our communities. Jenna served on the APA CA Central Section board from 2016 to 2018.

The APA Central Section would like to thank City of Clovis Planner, Ricky Caperton on all his efforts on the Board as the previous Membership Chair.

Free APA Student Membership

It’s easier and more affordable than ever for students and new planners to get started in APA. In fact, membership is now free for any student actively enrolled or matriculated in any university or college degree program. It remains free for the duration of an individual’s studies. “Free” includes APA, APA chapter, and AICP membership as well as membership in up to five APA divisions. Student members will be eligible for two years of reduced dues after ending their studies.

Our chapter would like to encourage current members to reach out to Central Valley community colleges, public and private universities in your area that have planning-related majors to help us increase our student involvement in the planning profession. Anyone on alumni boards or community college districts are welcome to contact Nicole Hoke our Student Programs Manager at nicole@odellplanning.com to help plan student-centric programming in the Central Valley.

2023 APA CA Annual Conference

It's official, due to the shake up in the conference schedules, the APA Central Section will be hosting the APA CA Annual Conference in 2023, which also happens to be APA CA's 75th Anniversary!
