Today, 14th June 2021, the Presidents of the the European Parliament, the Council of the EU and the European Commission signed the Regulation on the EU Digital COVID Certificate, which will become effective from the 1st July 2021.
This Certificate will represent a digital proof that a person has either been vaccinated against Covid-19, been tested negative or recovered from Covid-19.
The aim is to create a common tool in Europe to allow safe and free movement inside the EU, and to lift the current travel restrictions in a coordinated manner.
To date, 13 Member States have already started to issue EU Digital COVID Certificates. Others are technically ready to connect to the dedicated EU Gateway, set up to facilitate the authentication of the EU Certificates.
As stated in the dedicated webpage, “The EU Digital COVID Certificate should facilitate free movement inside the EU. It will not be a pre-condition to free movement, which is a fundamental right in the EU”.
