Fires in Greece: Ancient Olympia pilot site threatened, but unharmed
A map of the situation on the 18/08
This summer was marked by an unprecedented heatwave that hit Europe and the Mediterranean area.

In many locations, including Greece, wildfires destroyed natural ecosystems, obliged many populations to leave their homes and even caused the death of citizens and firefighters.

This month, we share the testimony of our partner, the Region of Western Greece, about how the Ancient Olympia site has been protected from the fires.

Thanks to the quick and valiant action of firefighters, staff of the site and local authorities, the Ancient Olympia archeological sites was left unharmed, and has now reopened to the public.

Report cover page image & IUCN Congress logo
The IUCN World Conservation Congress takes place in Marseille, France, from 3 to 11 September 2021, gathering 1400+ organisations from 160 countries to take decisions on how to influence global conservation policies for the coming decade.

Tourism has a crucial role to play in supporting conservation. At the IUCN Congress, many organisations involved in tourism sustainability joined the conversation, and the role of tourism in nature conservation was addressed in several congress sessions.

One highlight: the launch of “Visitors count! Guidance for protected areas on the economic analysis of visitation”, a new publication by UNESCO and the German Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN).
These new guidelines will help national stakeholders, protected area managers and researchers to assess the economic impacts of protected area tourism.
