Valencia pilot site: first sensors installed to measure the flow of visitors
Basilica de la Virgen de los Desamparados, Valencia
Do you remember about the HERIT-DATA pilot site of Valencia? In our September 2019 E-flash, we explained how our partners Valenciaport Foundation and Fundación Santa Maria La Real will install sensors to collect data about tourism flows in key areas of the city.

The set up of these sensors is now ongoing: after the first three sensors in the port terminal, two others are going to be installed at the Basilica of the Virgen de los Desamparados and at a crossing point in the city centre which is often particularly crowded.
A total of 11 sensors will be installed in the coming months, through the HERIT-DATA project and other projects led by the municipality. They will capture the number of mobile phones with the Wi-Fi connection activated, but without collecting personal data in order to preserve privacy.
In addition, Fundación Santa Maria La Real is going to install other data collection technologies that will analyse the temperature, humidity and lighting of the Basílica de la Virgen and the Cripta de San Vicente. This will allow to look at how the presence of big groups of visitors every day can impact the conservation of these sites.
All this data will converge in the HERIT-DATA platform, which will help to get information about, and to improve decisions related to the management of the tourism offer in Valencia and in the other pilot sites.
A web-app for tourists will also be developed and integrated to some existing Apps that are currently used by visitors. The aim is to provide them with real-time information about the crowdedness of some of the sites they visit.

Flockeo, a website to look at sustainable tourism,...from the sky!
Flockeo satellite data map

Today, out of 1,4 billion potential tourists, 46% of them are travelling in only 10 countries according to the UNWTO. Therefore, the challenge of inventing new touristic models is great.

Flockeo is a website aiming to answer this need. It was created by MURMURATION, a French start-up “with the objective of federating an ecosystem of committed players in the tourism world ».

The website connects tourists with professionals that offer a sustainable touristic experience or activity, through a satellite data map that locates the different initiatives. Tourists can use Flockeo’s map to find sustainable offers.

Tourists choose a destination based on the environmental impact of human activities on destinations.
To assess the ecological footprint of a destination, Flockeo looks at 3 indicators: pressure on water, quality of biodiversity and population density.

Once the tourists have chosen their destinations based on these criteria, they can connect with local stakeholders in sustainable tourism, rated according to a Sustainable Tourism Charter.
This charter gathers actions with environmental, social and economic reach. For instance, employing local actors or preserving biodiversity are some of the actions included in this chart.

740 establishments have already been listed on Flockeo.
If you want to register your company, ask for an environmental impact study of your destination or simply know more about Flockeo, visit its website !
