Annual Meeting Recap
Benj Guzman, GNCC Chair

Hello GNCC Members!

We had a successful annual meeting on Saturday, June 5th, 2021.  How do you define ‘successful’, you might ask?  Well, there are several metrics that could be used, but today I will use survival rate.  At our hybrid meeting we had 20+ people in person at the Nashua Country Club, much more than that online, and the result was a 100% survival rate.  Take that Covid!
Congratulations to our 2021 GNCC award recipients.

Outstanding Service Award: Dorothy Roach (Rochester), Janet Doucet (Nashua), and Jay Flanders (Woodstock)

Honorary Lifetime Members: Maryann Vermeulen (Plainfield) and Joel Leneker (Nutmeg)

Past Chair Award: Charlie Brown (Schenectady)
Six contestants (up one from last year) competed for the Bell Silver Quoits medal at Nashua Country Club on Friday June 4, 2021.

For the second year, the final round was between Benj Guzman from Broomstones and Bob Hogan from Peachtree and, for the second year the results were the same.  Benj defeated Bob to claim the title.  Benj is one of 8 people to win back-to-back years.

There were two contestants who won 6 consecutive years, William Cuthbertson and Doug Brugler.  However, Eddie Ocain, of the Norfolk Curling Club, deserves recognition as the GNCC’s undisputed “King of Quoits” having won 24 times (three times for six consecutive years from 1966-71, 1990-95, and 1997-2002).  Benj has a long way to go to match that record.

ANNUAL MEETINGS – More of the story

In previous Between the Sheets, I have written about some of the more unusual Annual Meetings since the first one in 1868.  This year of the 48 clubs that count toward a quorum, 34 participated in the Annual Meeting either in-person or virtually. They represented 70.83% of the GNCC membership.  In all 44 of our 73 clubs participated in the meeting.

Not what you want to see at your curling club.

On March 9, a burst pipe was discovered at the Belfast Curling Club. Because the club did not open for the season, its discovery was not timely. A large area of the lower level had become flooded with 6 inches of water, and upstairs water had pooled in the bar and the warm room. By 11:30 that night the water had been removed, but it was clear that a huge hurdle lay ahead for BCC.
