Twelve Institutions Named Beckman Scholars Program Awardees

   
The Beckman Scholars Program award is comprised of more than $1.5 million in funding for 61 undergraduate scholars at: University of Richmond, Pomona College, Bowdoin College, Miami University, Tufts University, University of Colorado, Boulder, Smith College, Carnegie Mellon University, University of Utah, University of California, Irvine, West Virginia University, and James Madison University. Each student will be provided with a unique 15-month mentored research experience, and each scholar-mentor pair received $26,000 in support. Congratulations!

Save the Date for the Beckman Symposium

      
The next Beckman Symposium will be held Aug. 6 - 8, 2020 at Hotel Irvine and the Beckman Center of the National Academies of Sciences and Engineering in Irvine, California. Registration opens in Spring 2020 and all invited guests will receive additional details by email. We look forward to seeing you!  


2019 BYI Leslie Schoop Named Moore Fellow in Materials Synthesis
 
Congratulations to 2019 Beckman Young Investigator Leslie Schoop, PhD, named a Moore Fellow in Materials Synthesis by the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation. Schoop is an Assistant Professor of Chemistry and received a 5-year grant in the amount of $1.7 million. The grant is "part of the foundation's Emergent Phenomena in Quantum Systems Initiative (EPiQS), which strives to deepen understanding of the organizing principles that lead to complex collective behaviors of electrons in materials and engineered structures." moore.org 

In December We Celebrated Mabel Beckman's Birthday, Born on 12/20/1900!

   

Recently Awarded

Beckman Institute Director Jeffrey Moore, PhD, received the 2020 ACS Award in Polymer Chemistry "for the conception, testing, and validation of the mechanophore hypothesis, and for pioneering concepts and research leading to self-healing polymers in coatings and composites."
 
Recently Published

2016 Beckman Scholar Jonathan Messerschmidt was published in the journal Nature: "Immunity to Commensal Papillomaviruses Protects Against Skin Cancer."


2015 AOB Postdoctoral Fellow Kelley R. Healey was published in the journal Emerging Microbes & Infections: "Novel FKS1 and FKS2 Modifications in a High-Level Echinocandin Resistant Clinical Isolate of Candida glabrata." 

Recently Hired

2015 AOB Postdoctoral Fellow Katherine M. Davis, PhD, will start as Assistant Professor of Chemistry at Emory University in January 2020. Learn more about The Davis Lab here.

Staff Volunteer Day

On December 11, Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation Staff volunteered at Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County, sorting and preparing boxes of food and non-perishable items to help our neighbors in need. Learn more about Second Harvest here

IUSD Career Day

On December 12, Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation Staff gave tours of the Arnold O. Beckman Revolutionary Tools Exhibit to students from the Irvine Unified School District.
