Dear Colleague,
Have you wondered about what adult education programs in countries throughout the world comprise of or entail? What issues do international colleagues face? How are they similar or different from those you address?
These topics were the focus of the Coalition for Lifelong Learning Organizations (COLLO) Spring 2019 Symposium “What in the World is Going on in Adult Education?” held March 20, 2019. The session highlighted the work of international adult education organizations and program approaches in other countries including Canada, UK, Eastern Europe, Asia and Africa. Guided by COLLO Past President Lennox McLendon, participants explored issues of mutual concern with international colleagues as well as approaches they have devised that differ from ours.
Featured speakers included Ricarda Motschilnig, Deputy Secretary General, Policy and Advocacy Office, International Council on Adult Education (ICAE), the only global civil society organization for adult education, who described ICAE’s policy and advocacy initiatives and policy and advocacy trends around the globe. Solomon Mbũrũ Kamau shared Kenya Adult Learners' Association (KALA) experiences using e-readers to increase literacy and functional literacy. Bisi Ideraabdullah Executive Director of Imani House, in Liberia West Africa and New York detailed Imani House’s efforts in providing adult literacy for internally displaced women in the Brewerville area of Monrovia, Liberia.
Other speakers were: Marcie Boucouvalas VP/North America, International Council for Adult Education (ICAE); Michele Diecuch Director of Programs, ProLiteracy; and Peter Waite, Executive Vice President ProLiteracy, Commissioner, US National Commission for UNESCO.  Kathy Peno, Professor of Adult Education and Coordinator, Adult Education Master's Program, University of Rhode Island, facilitated the session via Zoom. Co-sponsors were the Coalition on Adult Basic Education (COABE), the National Association of State Directors of Adult Education (NASDAE), ProLiteracy and Texas Christian University (TCU).
