Commitment and Contributions to Social Justice

In The AJCU Institutions
English. The Society of Jesus has had a clear horizon and purpose, to serve the Kingdom of God through faith rooted in justice and reconciliation. This mission has been made fruitful by the Spirit throughout 500 years and by the continuous reading of reality.

An example of this has been the work of the AJCU, which through the virtual conference "Commitment to Justice in Jesuit Higher Education", hosted by Georgetown University in 2021, addressed the Universal Apostolic Preferences in synergy with pressing issues in the framework of Higher Education, such as racial and environmental justice, migration, Women's leadership and Ignatian spirituality.   This activity was inaugurated by Father General of the Society of Jesus, Arturo Sosa Abascal, who in his opening message considered the importance of active commitment to justice in our educational apostolate. We invite you to read more about this important event and, above all, to review the conference resources for reflection and action in our classrooms and work teams.

PERSPECTIVES FROM THE JESUIT NETWORK

Education and Gender: Equality and Non-Discrimination Towards
Women and the LGBTQ+ Community

David Fernandez,S.J., Former Executive Secretary of AUSJAL

As we commemorate International Women's Day, we invite our Jesuit Higher Education communities to reflect and examine their role and commitment to justice and equity with the women who collaborate in our apostolates and those we serve.
For this reason, we present the article "EDUCATION AND GENDER: EQUALITY AND NON-DISCRIMINATION AGAINST WOMEN AND THE LGBTQ+ COMMUNITY," by Fr. David Fernández Dávalos, S.J. We are convinced that its reading can provoke deep reflections in our community.

“Inferiority and superiority between genders are inculcated from childhood. In schools, through the hidden curriculum, gender mandates begin to be inculcated. Sexist attitudes, discrimination, and abuse constitute cultural violence that is learned from early childhood and that sustains various forms of direct violence.”
Fr. Fernández Dávalos, S.J., is the former executive secretary of the Association of Jesuit Universities in Latin America (AUSJAL). He also held positions as president of IBERO Mexico-Tijuana, IBERO Puebla, ITESO, and director of the Miguel Agustin Pro Juarez Human Rights Center (Centro Prodh). He also participated in the 36th General Congregation of the Society of Jesus.

RESOURCES

Jesuit Prayer App
Are your students looking to start their day with God? To deepen in Ignatian spirituality? To find their daily purpose in life? The Jesuit Prayer app is a well-known tool that reminds us that God pursues us in the routines of our home and work life, and in the hopes and fears of life's challenges. The founder of the Jesuits, Saint Ignatius of Loyola, wrote the Spiritual Exercises to deepen our relationship with Christ and to move our contemplation into service. May this app anchor your day and strengthen your resolve to remember what truly matters.
Leadership Gifts And Skills
What personal competencies and strengths helped your students manage situations out of their comfort zone? Which gifts do I desire for a greater service of their mission? This resource helps students to identify their weaknesses as well as focus on their gifts for a greater service of their mission. The material about the qualities and competencies of successful leaders can be used for on campus activities, workshops, retreats and in class. It includes a reflection with short passages, an exercise linked to the topic of the section that take the students from reflection to action and a theoretical input linked to the topic summarising insights from academic experts.
Pacto Educativo: Un Llamado A La Solidaridad Global En Un Mundo Roto
