Pressing Onward: "Alongside"

The reading for this Sunday comes from what is known as Jesus’ farewell discourse, where the writer of John seeks to summarize many of Jesus’ most important messages. In the section we will focus on, Jesus shares that he will leave the world and go to “God’s house,” where he will prepare a place for the disciples who continue to believe. John's gospel encourages us, along with the disciples present, to remain united and not drift away. Although Jesus will go to God’s house (heaven), Jesus sends the Paraclete to sustain the community.

“Advocate” is a translation of the greek word paraklētos, a name for the Holy Spirit. In the original language, the word means “to call alongside.” “Continuing Presence of Jesus” would be an expression of this meaning. Having the Spirit in the community is almost the same as having Jesus in the community in the flesh.

With that understanding, what does it mean to believe that the presence of Jesus is alongside us? I don't believe Jesus' intent is to be an "elf-on-the-shelf" type of presence, keeping his eye on us, waiting for us to do something wrong. Instead it is a leading presence, guiding us toward the example of living and loving as Jesus showed us when he was in the world. The Holy Spirit's presence moves us towards God's will in our decision making; in relationships, in work, in our family and in our finances.

We will seek Christ's continued presence in our individual lives, as well as within our worshiping community this Sunday, not to cause us concern that Jesus is looking over our shoulders in judgment, but instead reminding us that with his guidance our lives will look more like his and reflect more of God's will in all that we do with our time, talent and treasures. I look forward to seeing you all at 9:30am online or in-person, this Sunday.

June 5: A Celebration of Generosity and Pentecost!

Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.
                                                          Philippians 3:13-14

Our stewardship scripture clearly invites us to have our "destination" in mind as we run this race called the Christian Life. Like Paul, we know we haven't reached our destination yet, but we know exactly what we're running towards. To mark the end of our stewardship campaign, honor the generosity of our church family AND celebrate Pentecost, the birth of the Christian Church, we're having a party after worship, Sunday, June 5.

The Destination Celebration in our Fireside Park will feature live music, food trucks, Kona Ice, a character portrait artist, inflatable fun for the kids and a silent auction, all beginning at 11am. It's going to be a great afternoon! We've received donations of time and finances to offer this great event. If you'd like to contribute to offset costs, please contact Muriel Mellor. When we invest together our ministries, outreach and even celebrations become more meaningful.

Vacation Bible School is Coming

We may be a little biased, but we think its going to be monumental event! Actually, we're sure of it because this year's VBS theme is just that - Monumental! August 1-5 from 9am-1pm we will celebrate God's greatness through story, song, play and art. Open to all pre-school children 4 years and older from LMUMCC and LM1 and K-5th in the community, the entire week costs only $25 (scholarships are available if needed). Snacks, lunch and themed t-shirts will be provided to all who attend. Participants are invited back to worship on VBS Sunday, August 7 to sing a few of their favorite songs for the congregation. Bring the whole family!

An undertaking of this magnitude takes many volunteers. Click here if you would like to help with teaching, crafts, food preparation, or supervision. Click here for registration. We can't wait to celebrate God's goodness with the children of La Mesa!
LM1 is a Polling Place

Did you know that when our church opens the Social Hall as a polling place beginning May 28, any registered voter will be able to vote here from 8am to 5pm until June 7? That's right....the days of assigned polling places are gone thanks to the internet! When someone comes to vote, they will enter their address into the system and the correct ballot for them will appear on the voting screen. There will also be bins to drop mail-in ballots in our labyrinth. That means, you could attend worship and vote immediately after either May 29 or June 5. How's that for multi-tasking?

Poll workers will be arriving each day at 7:30am. Please give them a warm welcome and thank them for their service if you see them on our campus!
Create Lanterns AND Eat Ice Cream!

La Mesa First is excited to partner with Claudia Erickson and Unplugged Village for a great community event. Members of the church, the Children's Center and friends in the neighborhood will be invited to decorate paper lanterns for display in our labyrinth courtyard. This will be followed by an ice cream social under the stars to enjoy our creations hung beneath the lights.

Join us at 4pm to decorate your lantern, then feel free to enjoy the adjacent Farmer's Market on La Mesa Blvd. We will serve ice cream at 6:30 and light the lanterns at 7:30.

Tuesday Night Women's Bible Study Launches New Book

Now is a great time to join us!  The Women's Book and Bible Study meets on Tuesday nights at 6:30 pm on  ZOOM. We're starting a new book on May 24 entitled Elijah: Spiritual Stamina for Every Season by Melissa Spoestra. We'd love to see you there!
~ Eliane Olson and Lucinda Rasmussen

"In this study grounded in 1 and 2 Kings, we examine the life of the prophet Elijah, an ordinary man who did extraordinary things for God in the midst of the highs and lows of life. We’ll learn some of the spiritual stamina secrets that helped him to hold on and persevere in faith, including practical habits related to making decisions, caring for the soul, accepting his circumstances and mentoring.  Elijah doubted and struggled just as we do, but ultimately he chose to believe God. As we study his life, we will grow in faith and develop spiritual stamina that will help us not only to survive but actually thrive in every season." (Amazon)

United Women in Faith Change June Meeting
