Happy Easter!

Wait, we're not there yet! We can't abandon Jesus on his journey to the cross at this crucial time. The events that are a part of tonight and the rest of Holy Week are crucial to our understandings of our celebration on Easter Sunday. It's only then when we can finally say, "He Is Risen! He Is Risen Indeed! Happy Easter! "

Tonight we'll gather at 5:30pm to hear the story of Jesus giving a new commandment, "to love one another as I have loved you." Jesus doesn't just tell us to love one another, but shows us how by instituting what we call the Last Supper and washing his disciples' feet. Jesus sets an example of love through sacrificial and humble service which we'll experience together this evening.

We are then invited into a time of contemplation and reflection for the next 48 hours, as you are invited to walk the labyrinth anytime on Good Friday remembering Christ's sacrifice on the cross and then pondering the work of Christ on the cross as you decorate the Easter Flower Cross with purchased or cut flowers from your garden from 10am-2pm on Saturday.

Finally, on Easter Sunday we will celebrate God's greatest miracle, defeating fear and death through Christ's Resurrection. Resurrection is such a difficult thing to comprehend, let alone explain. There are so many beliefs about resurrection. I like how Marjorie Suchocki helps us understand the mystery of resurrection in her book God, Christ, Church: "It's like the sun . . . we cannot look directly at the resurrection because it is not given for us to see.  Nevertheless, it illumines everything so we can make our way in the world."

Let's Celebrate Easter together at 9:30AM online or in-person, as we let the love of God light our way in the world, then enjoy life together with a fun Easter egg hunt for kids and an Easter Bonnet contest for adults at the Fireside Park @ 10:45AM!

He is risen! He is risen indeed! Happy Easter!

Journey from Holy Thursday to Easter with LM1
During this most sacred week on the Christian calendar, we invite you to remember Jesus' Last Supper, his suffering, his death and his resurrection at LM1. There are several opportunities to join together in our remembrance and celebrations this week. Here's what to expect:
  • Maundy Thursday - outdoor worship with communion and hand washing at 5:30pm. We will be collecting hygiene supplies to donate to those in need.
  • Good Friday - open labyrinth for quiet prayer and meditation beginning at 9am, and hosted from 5:30-7:30pm.
  • Holy Saturday - bring purchased or garden flowers to decorate the Easter Cross from 10am-2pm for our Easter Sunday processional.
  • Easter Sunday - Celebrate the risen savior at 9:30am with full choir and trumpet, followed by an Easter Egg Hunt and Bonnet Contest at the Fireside Park at 10:45am.
Easter Plan for Kids and Parents!

Easter is a fun celebration for the whole family. Here are a few things families can prepare for to make Easter Sunday fabulous:
  • It's important that children are included in the greatest celebration of the Christian year. All children are invited to stay in worship at 9:30am; Sunday school will take a break. There will be a Children's Moment and engaging family message by Pastor Christian, the Fiery Spirit Children's Choir will sing, and the music with choir and trumpet will be uplifting and fun!
  • Following worship we'll all march over to the Fireside Park for an Easter egg hunt. We encourage children to come with a basket or bag for egg collecting. Some baskets will be provided.
  • For the adults, we'll host an Easter Bonnet contest, so wear your most elaborate and festive hat!

Finally, if you are willing to bring a healthy treat for our "hospitality table", such as fruit, pastries or even vegetables (little bunnies like celery and carrots), please feel free to bring something to share. We'll collect your food as you come on to the patio before service.
Sunday Morning Book Group Resumes April 24

After a brief Easter break, the Sunday Morning Book Group is ready to jump in on its new selection, One Life To Give: Martyrdom and the Making of the American Revolution, by John Fanestil. As a special treat, John will join us for the first meeting on April 24 to talk with us about his book. You can purchase a copy at a bookseller of your choice, or direct from the author here.

Until the book group gathers, leader Eric Dewey-Hoffman recommends watching the PBS/Ken Burns two-part documentary about Benjamin Franklin. He suggests you ask yourself, "Was Franklin, as H.W. Brands has said, the First American, or was he America's Affable Uncle? Also, wasn't he (John Adams criticism of his personal life aside) the kind of Quaker we all want to be?"

All are welcome to join the lively discussion on April 24 at 11:10am here.
Join Earth Care Ministry in La Mesa Clean-Up
You are invited to join the Earth Care Ministry and I Love A Clean San Diego on April 23 as we join forces to beautify our La Mesa Community as part of the 22nd Annual Creek to Bay Clean-up. We will meet at Vista La Mesa Church at 4210 Massachusetts Ave. in La Mesa at 9am.

This will be a guided clean-up with ILACSD and they suggest you bring:
  • comfortable clothes
  • close-toed shoes
  • sun protection (sunscreen or a hat)
  • water and snack
  • gardening/reusable gloves
  • bucket or paper bag
  • trash grabber if you have one

Celebrating Earth Day With Quartz Singing Bowls

So many of us are looking for ways to quiet our minds and spirits these days. One of the tools being used for this is Crystal Quartz Singing Bowls. Utilized in sound healing, yoga, and played at the beginning and end of meditation, experienced practitioners believe that the use of these bowls can reduce anxiety and result in therapeutic health benefits.

On April 24, when we celebrate Creation Sunday in church, we will incorporate Quartz Singing Bowls in our worship time. You won't want to miss this unique harmonic way to silence the outside world and enter into a time of worship with the Creator.

Later that day at 4pm, Maria Theresa invites all over the age of 15 to attend an hour-long session with herself and her seven Chakra-tuned bowls in our Social Hall. All you need to do is bring mats, pillows or blankets; whatever will help you feel comfortable and an open heart. This time will supplement our Contemplation Class taught by Cheryl Reagan, but you don't have to be part of the class to participate.

Come to the Table - A Conference-Wide Bible Study

The General and Jurisdictional Delegation of the Cal-Pac Conference have planned a 3-week Bible study, beginning the week of May 8, in which participants will grapple with provocative questions about our hurts and hopes, the nature of our connection and the unity found in common service.

Participants can sign up for a study group on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday evenings, joining the same night each week. Main input sessions will be in English, and small group discussions will be offered in English, Korean, Spanish and Tongan.

Each session will be limited to approximately 40, so you are asked to make a first and second choice. The goal is to have as many participants as possible. Each session is expected to last approximately 1 hour 15 minutes, although actual end times may vary based on the discussion.

Our hope is that in listening to the murmurings of the Spirit through our particular reflections, our Annual Conference body will be strengthened for our journey together as we seek to be disciples who transform the world with Christ’s love and God’s abundant grace.
