Through Christ There Are No Distinctions
Eugene Peterson interprets Paul's words in his letter to the Galatians in The Message Bible this way: "In Christ’s family there can be no division into Jew and non-Jew, slave and free, male and female. Among us you are all equal. That is, we are all in a common relationship with Jesus Christ." These words resonate loudly for me, as well as throughout the entirety of the LM1 community. Paul's words have informed us so much that they are reflected in the first portion of our mission statement as a church where we state our identity as, "... welcoming and affirming as a diverse community." We believe that, through Christ, there are no longer distinctions between humanity. All are God's children. Christ's salvation is available to all.

It seems fitting that this is the lectionary selection for this Sunday when we will celebrate the sacrament of baptism for an infant, reminding us of God's prevenient grace; God's gift of unconditional love for all, given even before we can be knowledgeable or aware of it. It's also fitting that we read these words as we are invited to celebrate, for the first time in La Mesa, a great celebration of black culture upon the historic anniversary of the emancapation of African American slaves, known as Juneteenth, at MacArthur Park after worship.  It's also fitting as we find ourselves in the middle of LGBTQIA Pride Month. All of these are celebrations of our great diversity and our call to unity as one humanity, created by God and affirmed through Jesus Christ.

My faith and my call to ministry are grounded in these words of Paul and confirmed through the study of Process Theology. One of the understandings of Process is that we are all related and when we claim the "Grace of Interdependence of Beloved Communities" we are always home. Martin Luther King put it this way, "relationships are the fabric of connections in which I cannot be who I am intended to be until you are who you are intended to be." May we be energized, inspired, and united for the common good by these words of Paul, Process, and even MLK where we will understand that God needs us to need each other, everyone, to be the people of God that God intends us to be.

Great First Yoga Class

Last Monday was our first yoga class at LM1 and it was a wonderful experience for all who attended. Under the watchful eyes of seasoned instructors, Sue Sullivan and Kat Pipike, experienced practitioners and the newly-initiated joined in sun salutations and conscious breathing exercises. No problem if you missed the first class; there will be a new one every Monday at 4pm in our Social Hall.

Class will end at 4:45, so parents of Children's Center students can attend before picking up their "littles" and heading home for dinner. All levels of yoga practitioners are welcome - from first-time participants to those who have a lifetime of experience. Modifications are available for all physical abilities.

The suggested donation for attending is $5 per class. No preregistration is required, so bring a yoga mat (if you have one) wear comfortable clothes and join us for this unique opportunity to bring body, mind and spirit together. We are able to provide mats if you need to borrow one. Also, if you have any yoga mats or blocks you aren't using, we will happily take them for this purpose.

We are pleased to announce that this year Summer Choir is happening for our adults and children! If you have ever thought about singing with us during the year or would just like to participate in July, mark your calendars for Thursdays and Sundays beginning June 30th!
We are happily rebuilding our programs following COVID shut-downs and looking forward to including new singers. This could be YOU!

Getting Ready for Camp Cedar Glen Campers

Summer Youth Camp is just around the corner and there's work to be done to get our beautiful camp in Julian ready for guests. Please consider joining a work party for a Camp Cedar Glen Volunteer Day June 22 from 10am-4pm. Let us know you will help here.

If volunteering isn't an option for you, maybe you can help the camp out with new supplies they need before the summer rush. Here's their wish list:
  • 100 pairs of scissors
  • 50 packs of markers
  • 50 bottles of hand sanitizer
  • 25 packets of Clorox wipes
  • 25 packages of baby wipes
  • 50 3-ring binders
  • Ziplock bags
  • New craft supplies
  • Lanyard and friendship bracelet materials
  • Colored construction paper
  • New balls and sports equipment
For questions, email here. You can bring your donations to church anytime before June 20. Thank you, in advance for any help you can offer!
Free COVID Tests Available

Do you or someone in your family need a COVID Test? We have boxes, each containing two tests, that we are available in the church office or in the Wesley Room on Sundays. Testing before family gatherings or when symptoms arise, is a great way to stem the tide of this virus, so don't be shy about requesting yours. We have an ample supply and want to get these tests into hands of people who can use them!
Vacation Bible School - We Need Volunteers!

We are excited to see the registrations for VBS continue to grow and the many children who have signed up. We want to ensure the best experience for them all. Would you consider volunteering (even if only for a few hours on any given day if not all days) to help make this week a success? Volunteers are needed to teach lessons, provide supervision, prepare food and help with crafts. Click here if you can help a half-day, a full day or multiple days. Thank you!

If you haven't signed your child up yet, there's still time. Open to all pre-school children 4 years and older from LMUMCC and LM1 and K-5th in the community. The entire week costs only $25; $20 for additional siblings. Click here for registration. We can't wait to celebrate God's goodness with the children of La Mesa!

Celebrating Grads and Dads

Camryn LillyFather's Day is June 19th. It's also a day when we will honor graduates. Pictured here are Camryn Lilly who graduated from Helix High School with honors and completing the Sports Medicine Pathway and Jack Johnson who graduated from Patrick Henry High School, also with honors and will be attending LSU on scholarship. Both grew up at La Mesa First! Pastor Christian would like to celebrate your graduates from the pulpit and include their names and photos in the E-Mirror.

If you have a family member in the class of 2022, please send us their information (before the end of day, Friday)  so we can honor them. Email Pastor Christian with your graduate's name; your relationship to them; the name of the school they attended; a photo if you'd like one included; and any degrees, honors or titles being confirmed upon them. We're excited to celebrate all the hard work that goes in to reaching this important milestone.

Shopping for Someone in June?

June is here and with it, some major milestone celebrations! If you have a graduate in your life and you're unsure what present to give, consider a gift card that lets them make their own choice. Is there a dad or mentor in your circle who deserves a special Father's Day shout-out? We've got great gift card options for meals out, book sellers and more.  Finally, if "love is in the air" and you have a wedding to celebrate, we've got gift cards for that too!

Whoever you want to treat with a special gift (even if it's yourself!) we hope you will shop with us so your purchase benefits our church and Children's Center.  We carry great gift cards through Raise Right for your regular shopping or gift-giving available through the church office and on the patio, Sundays after worship. You can also email Suanne Dewey-Hoffman to place your order or get the code to sign-up online.
