Muskies Inc. Twin Cities chapter meetings (except summer) are held at 7:00 pm the second Tuesday of every month.
In non-pandemic times we meet at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 1114 American Boulevard West, Bloomington, MN.
HAPPY NEW YEAR – at last!! We hope to be getting together in person this year sooner rather than later. Hopefully by season opener we can gather once again. We have had good results with the on-line general meetings through all of this and are glad that fishing participation was up all across Minnesota. This is a good sign for the sport for sure. We had record youth participation and near record Tournament participation and hope to continue that trend in 2021.

Perhaps the best thing to look forward to in 2021... Just imagine how dumb the Muskies will be in Canada by next summer, most will not have not seen a bait of any kind in over a year!

Two Big Muskies in One Day
What a day chapter member Benjamin Knutson recently had on Mille Lacs. Ben has attempted for years to hook into a monster on Mille Lacs in late November. His first fish of the two-fish day was a monster 56.5-incher with a 27-inch girth and the second, caught within a half hour, was 53 inches. The story was featured in the Minneapolis StarTribune and on KSTP news. If you haven’t already seen the stories of the two-fish Mille Lacs day here’s a couple of links:

Congratulations Ben!!!
Chapter Elections Held in December

The Twin Cities chapter held annual elections during December via online voting. Re-elected to the Board of Directors serving a 2-year term starting in January, are Jim Doyle, Casey Friskney, Pete Kemmer, Dale Mueller, John Newman, Denise Olson, and John Sadusky. They join board members Greg Ide and Jim Kroupa. We want to thank retiring Board members Doug Malsom, Stu McIntosh, Elaine Randolph, Nolen Ryba, Eric Schultz, Chris Smythe, Steve Smythe, and Alex Worobel for serving on the Board for the past several years.

The retirement of Elaine Randolph left the chapter in need of a Treasurer. Steve Agrimson has stepped forward to fill that position and will be welcomed to the Board of Directors at its first meeting in January. Chapter Officers, Board of Directors, and Committee Contacts for 2021 are:

Seeking Nominations for Muskie Award

The Muskie Award is presented each year to a deserving chapter member who has constantly and unselfishly devoted time and energy over the years to promoting and improving the goals of Muskies, Inc.

The first Muskie Award was presented to Muskies, Inc founder, Gil Hamm in 1974. At that time, our National umbrella had not yet been formed and the award recipient was chosen from among all Muskies, Inc. members, regardless of chapter affiliation. Once there were a number of chapters, it became too difficult to choose a recipient from the entire organization and the national Muskie Award was dropped for 1980. At that time, the Twin Cities chapter made the decision to continue the award for our chapter.

Nominations of one or more individuals for the Muskie Award must be submitted in writing. Include the reasons you are nominating that person or a history of the person’s involvement with the Twin Cities Chapter over the years.

Send your nominations to Jim Kroupa at 6311 Steller Circle, Excelsior, MN 55331. Or email them to Jim at Call Jim at 952-474-5967 if you have questions. Nominations must be submitted by January 31.
Share Your Story for the Muskie Tale Award

The “Muskie Tale” Award is not for the member catching the most or the biggest fish. We already have awards for them. It’s an award that anyone could earn any year.

The “Muskie Tale” has been presented each year since 2006 to the club member who shares the best tale about something that happened the past season while fishing. We’re looking for stories that are something a little out of the ordinary, not necessarily just about the big one that got away. Maybe something happened while fishing, or on the way to fishing, or on the way back from fishing, or maybe you found something interesting on the end of your line, or some kind of mishap happened while you were out fishing – or your boat sank in the middle of Lake of the Woods, or the black flies and mosquitoes nearly ate you when you got lost. We all, no matter what our fishing skills, have a story to tell.

The “Muskie Tale” has been presented each year since 2006. The award is a replica of the tail of the world record muskie. The member who shares the best tale will be presented the traveling “Muskie Tale” Award. The recipient will have the trophy for one year and then must present it to the new winner for the next year.

Share your story with us by emailing your “tale” to Denise Olson at
Join Red Wing Lodge, LOTW Outing

Red Wing Lodge, Sabaskong Bay, Lake of the Woods, the family owned and operated resort for over 55 years, has scheduled net year’s annual joint outing with Twin Cities and North Metro Muskies, Inc. chapters for August 7-14, 2021. The event was canceled for 2020 because of COVID-19 and they are looking forward to hosting the event next year.

Mike and Anne Bartlett and family have continued this fall to make improvements in their cabins and on their beautiful grounds, as they do every year, in preparation for providing their loyal customers the excitement of big-time Canadian muskie fishing. To learn more about Red Wing Lodge go to:

On the Water Newsletter Editor

Starting with this issue, On the Water has a new look. Instead of being sent as an attachment, the newsletter is totally in email format. This format alleviates sending out numerous small-batch emails and hopefully, will make it easier for another person to take over as editor. Current newsletter editor, Denise Olson, has been working on the newsletter for over 20 years and would like someone to take over as editor for her.

The newsletter editor is responsible for content, producing the newsletter, emailing it to the majority of subscribers, and uploading current copy to the website on or about the first of each month. About 70 copies need to be printed and mailed to subscribers who receive the newsletter by snail-mail. All electronic files of current newsletter will be turned over. While not a board position, it helps to attend the board meetings to know what is happening in the chapter.

If you’re interested in taking over production of On the Water, please contact Denise at or 612-804-4687 for more information.
Chapter T-shirts Available

In response to many requests, the chapter now has long-sleeved grey crew-neck t-shirts with the large chapter logo on the front available for purchase. L and XL shirts sell for $25, 2XL and 3XL are $30. If you want the shirt mailed, add $9. Otherwise we will arrange for pick-up times at the Knights of Columbus in Bloomington where our meetings take place. To place an order for the shirts, go to our website at:
Thank Our Sponsors

A big thank you to all the manufacturers, retailers and resorts that have helped the Twin Cities chapter in the past year by donating merchandise and trips used for prizes at our Banquet and Tournaments as well as at the welcome table at each meeting.

Please make an effort to support our sponsors so they have an incentive to keep on supporting us. Without them this chapter could not do what it does for the resource and its members.

If you’re looking for a new bait, remember that manufacturers of some of the most productive baits ever designed are among our sponsors. And remember to buy them from sponsoring retailers. If you’re looking for a muskie trip, keep the sponsoring resorts in mind.
