Meeting ID: 852 3372 6579

Muskies Inc. Twin Cities chapter meetings (except summer) are held at 7:00 pm the second Tuesday of every month.
In non-pandemic times we meet at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 1114 American Boulevard West, Bloomington, MN.
At last! the days are getting longer and it's all downhill to open water! For the spring we are still looking at distanced meetings but the hope is that by summer we can do outdoor activities as a group again.

We will again be supporting the MN DNR efforts to raise and stock fish in any way we can this year and ensure that the West metro lakes stocking plan targets are met. We were fortunate last year to successfully run our main fund-raising activities and are therefore in a good position to support stocking fish this year to avoid any gaps in the plan for our local waters.

The statewide support in 2020 by chapters and individuals to purchase rear for a second year and stock any and all fish available is still something worth thanking everyone for, there would have been no stocking on 2020 at all without it. I would also like to again thank all those involved in running our banquet and tournaments as that is how we are able to support stocking and rearing again in 2021.

Just a friendly reminder! Time for everyone to get going over your gear for the season! Sharp hooks, smooth reels and tight lines are on the horizon!

MN Muskie Expo Scheduled for March 5-6-7

George’s Minnesota Muskie Expo, Minnesota’s premier muskie fishing event, is scheduled for March 5-6-7. For the second year in a row, the Expo must be held as a virtual event. Most exhibitors who were scheduled to be at this year’s live event will be having Expo specials and discounts during the three days of the Expo. To take advantage, to www.mnmuskieexpo.com and click on the Exhibitors tab or the link on the home page. On the Exhibitors page, click on any of the exhibitors listed to be directed to their web page or Facebook to find their Expo specials.

The unique aspect of the Expo is being able to buy direct from lure manufacturers, getting low prices, custom colors or the newest prototype baits. The three-day event is dedicated to muskies and muskie fishing and at this year’s virtual event will feature some of the top muskie anglers sharing secrets of success in seminars. Check the website for seminar schedule.

The Expo was founded over 25 years ago by chapter member George Wahl, inventor and manufacturer of the Eagle Tail lure. We all miss the ability to get together with other muskie people at a non-virtual event. Next year’s event will be at a new venue, the Warner Coliseum at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds.
Vince Trotta Will Be Missed by Muskies, Inc.

Long-time chapter member Vince Trotta passed away January 17 at age 85. Vince was active in the Twin Cities Chapter while he lived in the state, participating in many chapter activities and taking photos to commemorate many banquets and Veteran’s “Fishing Opener” events.

Vince was part of the original committee that created the national MI History Committee that acquired and cataloged historical items, storing the archives in his basement for many years. Among other things, the committee secured many trophies and plaques, MUSKIE magazines, and obtained Muskies, Inc. founder Gil Hamm’s own tackle and lures.

He was selected to the Muskies, Inc. Hall of Fame and worked on Muskies, Inc.’s 40th Anniversary Banquet in 2005. He managed to locate and get five of Muskies, Inc. original thirteen founders, as well as Gil’s widow, Midge, to attend.

Vince made friends with MI founder Gary Bennyhoff and caught his last Muskie fishing with Gary on Leech Lake.

Services have been held. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Edinboro University of Pennsylvania Annual Fund, Advancement Office, Alumni House, 210 Meadville Street, Edinboro, PA 16444, (814)732-2992, advancement@edinboro.edu.

Online condolences can be given at www.thompson-miller.com.
Chapter Members Only Contest
from Members Only Chair, Mike Darley

The annual Members Only contest winners will be announced at our chapter’s March 9 meeting. We will be doing this ‘virtually’ this year over Zoom. I will be putting together a slide show similar to past years to share pictures of our members’ catches.

With that being said, please send me your pictures from this year! Please send them to me in the following preference: 1) Michael.Darley@libertymutual.com subject “Muskies”, 2) Facebook Messenger, 3) 715-225-0167.

Lastly, we are still holding plaques from the 2020 and previous year’s Members Only contest. This has caused us to reevaluate how we order/present plaques moving forward. We want to make sure we are using our chapter’s funds wisely. If you finished in a placing position in a category this year and you do not want a plaque, please let me know. These funds can be used in a different capacity within the chapter and my limited garage storage will thank you!

See you in March, and look forward to hearing your stories!
Share Your Story for the Muskie Tale Award

The “Muskie Tale” Award is not for the member catching the most or the biggest fish. We already have awards for them. It’s an award that anyone could earn any year.

The “Muskie Tale” is presented to the club member who shares the best tale about something that happened the past season while fishing. We’re looking for stories that are something a little out of the ordinary, not necessarily just about the big one that got away. Maybe something happened while fishing, or on the way to fishing, or on the way back from fishing, or maybe you found something interesting on the end of your line, or some kind of mishap happened while you were out fishing – or your boat sank in the middle of Lake of the Woods, or the black flies and mosquitoes nearly ate you when you got lost. We all, no matter what our fishing skills, have a story to tell.

The “Muskie Tale” has been presented each year since 2006. The award is a replica of the tail of the world record muskie. The member who shares the best tale will be presented the traveling “Muskie Tale” Award. The recipient will have the trophy for one year and then must present it to the new winner for the next year.

Share your story with us by emailing your “tale” to Denise Olson at tcmuskiesincnews@gmail.com. The next winner will be chosen at our chapter awards March 9.
Save the Date -- 54th Frank Schneider, Jr. Memorial Muskie Tournament is September 10, 11, 12- 2020
While planning your fishing outings for the year be sure to include the Frank Schneider, Jr. Memorial Muskie Tournament. Taking part in the tournament puts you on Minnesota’s legendary muskie trophy waters of Bemidji, Cass Lake, Walker, Longville, MN – some of the best muskie water in North America.

Unsure of what the COVID impact might be this fall, the Tournament Committee is maintaining a flexible posture to make it happen with contestant safety the priority. Hopefully the Friday/Saturday feeds and Sunday awards banquet so missed in 2020 will return this year. Be sure to follow the tournament postings in this newsletter to get the latest info.

Before closing this article, I would like to thank and offer best wishes on behalf of the Tournament Committee to an iconic TC chapter and tournament  volunteer, Elaine Randolph. After years of service to the chapter she has decided to step back as a volunteer. Without her involvement many of the events we take for granted. just wouldn’t have happened. Thank you, Elaine.

The TC Chapter and Frank Schneider tournament needs more volunteers like Elaine. I encourage you to get involved in becoming an ionic in your own right by volunteering your time. Please contact me at tcmi.fstourneydirector@gmail.com or any of the chapter’s Board Members if interested.
Join Red Wing Lodge, LOTW Outing

Red Wing Lodge, Sabaskong Bay, Lake of the Woods, the family owned and operated resort for over 55 years, has scheduled net year’s annual joint outing with Twin Cities and North Metro Muskies, Inc. chapters for August 7-14, 2021. The event was canceled for 2020 because of COVID-19 and they are looking forward to hosting the event next year.

Mike and Anne Bartlett and family have continued this fall to make improvements in their cabins and on their beautiful grounds, as they do every year, in preparation for providing their loyal customers the excitement of big-time Canadian muskie fishing. To learn more about Red Wing Lodge go to: http://www.redwinglodge.net/

Thank Our Sponsors

A big thank you to all the manufacturers, retailers and resorts that have helped the Twin Cities chapter in the past year by donating merchandise and trips used for prizes at our Banquet and Tournaments as well as at the welcome table at each meeting.

Please make an effort to support our sponsors so they have an incentive to keep on supporting us. Without them this chapter could not do what it does for the resource and its members.

If you’re looking for a new bait, remember that manufacturers of some of the most productive baits ever designed are among our sponsors. And remember to buy them from sponsoring retailers. If you’re looking for a muskie trip, keep the sponsoring resorts as well as the sponsoring guides in mind.
