50th anniversary of E-paths
10th anniversary of LQT-BE

2022 is for ERA a very important year as two anniversaries have been held within the last month. You can watch these celebrations on the videos of the ceremonies on the ERA youtube channel:

Award for E9 and E11 & LQT-BE ViaBerna

Both European long-distance paths – E9 and E11, „Baltic trails“ passing through Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania – were presented by Lonely Planet as one of the best new long-distance hiking trails of the world in 2022!

Also, the last certified Leading Quality Trail – Best of Europe „ViaBerna“ is presented as a new 300-kms hiking trail which combines cities, lakes and mountains, showcasing the country’s scenery for hikers of all abilities. To read more about it, see here.

Waymarking brochure

For the third year, ERA is cooperating with the E+ project “Improvement of good governance of climbing and mountaineering in Europe” with the main partner, the European Union of Mountaineering Associations. One of the important outputs of this project is the waymarking brochure called “Waymarking in Europe”, a reference book on how waymarking is done in Europe.

The brochure includes a description of 44 waymarking systems in 34 European countries and in addition, an overview table with signs across Europe. The book was created for walkers, who decide to walk in an unknown country and understand the signs and signposts they should follow safely to the destination.

Rating system – questionnaire

Many different systems for rating the difficulty of routes exist in Europe, sometimes based on very different methods and criteria. The clear and harmonised level of difficulty between hikes is a real challenge : to enable hikers of all levels to make an informed choice about the technical and physical level of the route planned.
For this reason, the French Rambling Federation (FFRandonnée), with the support of ERA, would like to know about the different rating systems that exist in Europe. These results could be a support for discussions and workshops in order to ensure a stronger cooperation between different European partners on this subject. This survey is available in three languages: English, French and German. The deadline for the responses is before 31 August 2022.

Walking week in Sibiu

Due to the uncertain situation in Europe, the EURORANDO 2022 in Romania was cancelled. On the other hand, the individual fans and interested groups are always welcome to spend a “walking week in Sibiu” (RO) during the dates of their choice. You can choose from the same number of hikes and cultural trips as were prepared for the EURORANDO final week. All of them are of a high value and can offer a large variation of Transylvanian beauties.
Please contact the Sibiu organisers for more details.

Aqua Walking Challenge

The 1st Aqua Walking Challenge will be held from 23 – 25 Sept. 2022 in Roses, Catalonia, Spain. The groups of best aqua walkers from Catalonia, Italy, France and Bavaria will participate.

European Winter Walking Days 2023

The successfully started winter walking days in 2022 continue in 2023 too! This time in the PillerseeTal, Tyrol, in the neigbourhood of the famous Kitzbüheler Horn. It is the snowiest region of Tyrol. Please save the dates 9 – 12 March 2023 in your diary. Check the programme here.
