Interim President Message
An Update to Membership

Dear BDMHA Members,

On Wednesday October 20, 2021 I took over as the Interim President of Bedford and District Minor Hockey Association (BDMHA). I have been a volunteer with Bedford Minor Hockey since 2009 having many different roles in our Association.  I feel very privileged to be the Interim President of our organization and will continue to work hard for our organization and our membership.

For those who do not know me, I have been the Controller, VP of Finance, and President of BDMHA (June 2018 – June 2021). In addition, I have managed numerous teams within BDMHA and have been active volunteering in our Association over the past 12 years.

I live in the Papermill Lake subdivision with my wife Kimberly and two boys Cameron (Acadia University) and Carter (U18 Recreation). I am a Chartered Professional Accountant, have completed and lectured the Chartered Professional Accountant In-Depth Tax Program and Specialize in US/International Taxation.  I am a Tax Partner and the National Leader of the US Personal Tax Practice for Grant Thornton LLP. Previously, I sat on the Board of Evaluators for CPA Canada, and on the Board of Directors for Regional Residential Service Society.

I want to congratulate our U13 AAA team on winning the 2021 Jordan Boyd Memorial Tournament. I was at the Championship game and it was electric. In addition, I had the privilege to spend some time with the Boyd family and they are exceptionally proud of our Association and the success of this tournament.

Our BDMHA team has been very busy over the past week.  We have completed our U18 competitive tryouts, been working through various shortages of goalies at different levels, completed the U18 Recreation draft (completed by Jason Foster, VP Recreation and Jennifer MacLeod, U18 Coordinator), completed our U9 placements and so much more.

Brian Furdas has resigned from the position of VP Competitive for BDMHA. Brian has been a long-time volunteer and has dedicated many hours to our organization and I want to thank him for his time and wish him the best.

We have had few changes in our executive recently and I want to reassure our membership of the actions we are taking to rebuild our board and deliver a high-quality hockey program.

  • As indicated in the Executive message of October 20, 2021, we have established an independent committee, consisting of members external to BDMHA.  This committee has been asked to review matters related to our recent tryout process. The committee has convened, and we will update the membership following the completion of their review. I expect this to be completed over the next week or so. Please have patience as the committee works through this process.

  • We have realigned duties amongst our remaining board members to ensure that hockey programming can continue for all players, without disruption;

  • The Board has reconvened regular meetings to discuss operations and work collaboratively to improving our organization;

  • We are engaged with partners at Hockey Nova Scotia to review matters and find the best course of action for our players, parents and members.

You have trusted our organization to provide a positive hockey experience. I want to assure you that it is a responsibility we take seriously. We are committed to improving the Association and see these recent changes as an opportunity to focus on making BDMHA the best organization possible.

We will be sending our annual tryout survey in the coming weeks and I encourage all of you to complete the survey. We are fortunate to have an engaged membership and your suggestions for improvements will strengthen our organization for the future.

Our regular season starts this week and for many of you the focus will shift to practices and games. We will continue to maintain sight of the need to improve and I will keep you informed of our progress as we move forward.

Thank you for continuing to support BDMHA and contributing to our efforts to make it the best organization possible.
