Monthly Newsletter - November
Theme of the Month
Happy November, Sparkin' STEM family! This month, we'll be discussing the science and effects of phenomena such as Daylight Saving and Light Pollution. As November is here we have all moved our clocks back by 1 hour, but this is nothing new to us as we do this annually. Daylight Saving happens every year, but do we ever ask what Daylight Saving Time is and what is its purpose? This month we will also explore what Light Pollution is, and how this pollution can affect the environment and our families.  As usual, the newsletter will contain fun facts, a challenge, and much more!

Challenge of the Month:

For this month's challenge, we want you to make a Public Service Announcement! Your Public Service Announcement will be an infographic that explains the harms of Light Pollution. The infographic should also include methods as to how different cities can reduce their emitted light pollution.

This a Public Service Announcement, therefore the winner will be the most informative and best-looking infographic. Remember, winners of the challenge are recognized on our website, social media, and get a customized certificate!

Question of the Month:
What are the environmental effects of Daylight Saving Time?

We have discovered the environmental effects of Light Pollution, but do we know the environmental effects of Daylight Saving? Though Daylight Saving Time is presented as a method of conserving energy, is it actually helpful to our environment? You may use the article linked below to help you answer this question.

Interesting Facts!
1. Benjamin Franklin was one of the early ones to suggest an idea like Daylight Saving Time, he wanted to introduce this idea to save the use of candles

2. Though Canada, the USA, and Mexico change their timing for Daylight Saving Time every year, American states Arizona and Hawaii do not change their time for Daylight Saving

3.  Light Pollution kills millions of birds every year, this is because birds get injured due to crashing into brightly illuminating buildings. Eventually, they die due to their endured injuries

4. Artificial light at night disrupts the seasonal cycle of trees. Prolonged exposure to artificial light prevents many trees from adjusting to their seasonal variations

Hong Kong was declared the most light-polluted place in the world in 2013
