The Southern Lakes United U7/1 team was happy to finally get a game in after weeks of failed attempts at training due to the recent wet weather.

The team played against a very organised and skilled Toronto Awaba side but put up a good fight with everyone putting in a lot of effort.

Congratulations Cayd Terry for earning the player of the match award in his first game ever due to his effort and enthusiasm off the field.

We were fortunate enough to get our first game of the season in today, the rain held off to right after our game. The boys played so well considering we haven’t been able to get any training in.

We didn’t come away with a win but the boys played their hearts out and that’s all that matters, Harlen really got in there with some great attacks and fantastic passing to his team mates and so many near goals I lost count. Theo was great in defence stopping quite a few goals. Hudson.S did great with both defending and attacking and scored a great goal! Hudson.W also played well in defence and attack did some great passes and scored a goal. Trey was a super star on the field today thus winning our player of the week, with his speed he stopped countless goals and scored 3 goals!!

Korbyn came along as well today and although not feeling like taking the field he watched on supporting his team mates.

Great first came boys and looking forward to the rest of the season.

After what felt like an eternity of an off season, it was great to get a game in against Edgeworth, after a very disrupted off season. We knew it would be a tough game with no training and no subs, but the kids put in 110% effort, especially in the change to new rules and a larger pitch compared with last season.

We had Archer and Georgia take turns in goals and both put in an amazing effort for their first time in goals. Archer backed it up with some great attack and Georgia gave it her all in defence. Georgie had some amazing runs with her usual don't give up attitude, with Eli doing more laps of the field than I've ever seen coming close to scoring on a couple of occasions. 2 of our new team mates, Khalessi and Madi gave a great effort, Khalessi coming out of her shell after the first 5 mins. Benjamin also has returned to our team after a couple of seasons away and had some solid defensive moments also!

Our player of the week though was Archer, from asking to go in goals, and making some amazing saves!
A special shout out to Jax. Jax is out for a few weeks injured, but still made the trek to support his team-mates which was super impressive - we can't wait to have you back on the pitch!

It was a surprisingly dry day and with limited training, the boys were ready for the game. Rob said at the start of the game, “Let's have fun and play the best game we can”.

It worked and they played fantastic. Carter scored three goals. With Emmett scoring two. Cooper saved most of the goals that were shot at him in the first half. Kaien did well in the second half with the help of our great defence to not let in any other goals.

The Centennial Coal player of the match went to Carter Dorman. For being good in attack and getting three great Goals.
We are looking forward to playing soccer against other challenging teams throughout the season.

Can we practice our both foot passing at training on Tuesday, so we can spread the ball around the field creating more space?

The boys absolutely SMASHED it for their First Game of the season against Edgeworth.
After only having one training session the boys all fell back into their positions in the game and worked extremely well together.

Logan and Noah F took turns scoring goals with Logan scoring 3 and Noah scoring 2 with some awesome chase downs and ball control.

Mason and Nixon came in strong in the mid field with both boys having some great attacks at the ball.
Rhys and Ari were the ultimate defence team stopping the ball on many occasions from going past them.
Zac is a new member to our existing team and had a terrific first game with the boys. He played extremely well on his attack and defence and played the second half in goals with some great saves.

Riley was our goalie in the first half stopping Edgeworth from getting many goals in and came out flying in the second half scoring himself 2 goals and receiving the Player of the Match certificate.

All round the boys did an amazing job and I can’t wait to see what the rest of the season holds for them.

After many checks and double checks of Facebook regarding the field status, yes Edgeworth was the only fields open for the opening round. It was a soggy and slow start to the season for the boys with no training sessions yet and very long grass to contend with. The first half was like their first training session with everyone getting used to where they are playing and what everyone else is up to. Edgeworth took full advantage of this and got off to an early lead.

The second half was a different story, the team started to click and passes started to hit their mark culminating in a great goal from in front by our player of the match Will. Edgeworth won the day but the second half is a good indicator that the boys have a lot of potential and some training sessions, weather permitting, will allow them put together some really competitive games during the season.

Unfortunately, the excitement for our first game was fizzled out on Thursday when we were informed that our opposition was unable to field a team for round one certainly not the way we wished to start the season but I am sure it will only make us much stronger.

A big thankyou to both men's Friday all-age teams who welcomed three of our players to join them this week.
Each and every player in these squads was welcoming, encouraging and most importantly positive to the younger boys.

All of you are truly a credit to this club.

Joseph, Thomas and Byron took this opportunity with both hands and certainly did not look out of place, Infact all three of you played out of your skin!

Congratulations on such a wonderful mature effort.

Friday AA1

Southern Lakes came into round 1 from a difficult pre season due to the wet weather and with very few training sessions. We travelled to Mayfield to take on the Mayfield Junior Football club.

In our starting line up we had Tim in goals, Andy Fisher as a Right back and Jacob Noble as the left back. Dave and Duca were the centre backs. Chris and Lachlan in the Midfield, with Justin Burdus as an attacking midfielder. Nathan played on the right wing and Luca doing his debut with the club on the left. Darren Noble was our lone striker up front. On the bench we had Andrew Halton and Trent Woodley backing us up from Friday 2, and Byron, Tom and Joseph from the under 17s (more on them later, they were absolutely impressive).

The game started a bit cagey as you expect from a first game of the season, with both teams going to attack and having good and bad spells. Southern Lakes had the better chances through a rebound shot from Duca that went over the bar, and a great run from Luca down the left that just went wide of the post. Unfortunately, Mayfield took the lead after a rebound. We didn’t take long to answer, and Byron, our super u17 scored twice before half time to give us a 2-1 lead at the break.

We came back from the break high in spirit and looking for more goals, and it didn’t take long. We got a penalty, and Darren converted from the spot to make it 3-1. The fourth came with a great play from Andrew Halton, he passed to Duca to hit it first time down low and make it 4-1.

Southern Lakes got a bit sloppy and allowed Mayfield to score 2 goals back to 4-3. But a great individual run from Luca down the left put us ahead 5-3, with Byron claiming his hat trick not long after. Byron finished the score with his 4th of the game.

Final score:

Mayfield Juniors 3 - 7 Southern Lakes

Tim - impressive game, made good saves and his distribution was impeccable

Andy Fisher - all round great game, flawless with good tackles and starting counters. Great to have him back in the squad

Jaycob Noble - great game again from this young lad, worked well in defence, and communicated well

Dave - great game. Solid in defence and great with tackles and interceptions

Duca - got his goal, helped defence maintain its line

Chris - outstanding performance. Positioning, clearing, a great shield to the defenders and made their work easier

Lachlan - a true leader on the pitch. Great communication and helped control the game.

Justin - a true fighter, worked hard the whole game. Will be scoring plenty of goals

Nathan - great run down the right, came back in defence at the end of the game and did the job well.

Luca - a nightmare to the fullback. Quick and skilful. Great goal in his debut

Darren Noble - true striker, got his goal, and got a big mark on the attack success

Trent - came in as a sub, worked really well in the defence and was a big part in our win

Andrew Halton - great game, good runs and got himself an assist

Tom - fearless under 17 player. Played tough, made plays, outstanding effort

Joseph - great game from this young lad, fearless, and pushed us to score goals

Byron - left the best for last. It is not easy scoring 4 goals in a game, and this young lad did it for fun. Great positioning, great finish. Simple football, but so effective. Well done

Friday AA2

Despite almost half our starting lineup being away for the opening round, Friday 2 opened their season with a bang - defeating  Mayfield 4-0 at a wet but surprisingly quick-moving Stevenson Park.

Super-sub Byron (graciously on loan from the U17s) backed up from his 4 goal haul for Friday 1 by scoring the same again, but in an encouraging sign for the rest of the season, all were off the back of confident and courageous team movements through the middle of the park. We threatened all night and despite the scrappy conditions, never felt like we were chasing the game, turning up for each other and closing out any threat Mayfield put together.

With a few more matches under our belt and a full-strength starting lineup, we’re confident of challenging for the 2022 season. Big props to all who backed up for both games!
