Happiness is right around the corner

The other day Alice and I (Alan) went kayaking in our inflatable two-person kayak, appropriately named “tipsy”. This day we chose a portion of the Huron River between Milford, Michigan, and Proud Lake. It’s a meandering waterway, winding around crooks and corners, leaving one wondering what direction the current is even running.

As we leisurely paddled our way through a beautiful afternoon, we came around a corner and happened upon an old man with a little dog on a leash standing at the water’s edge. It was almost as if he was waiting for us. As we came into his sight, he yells out to us . . . “Hey, did I ever tell you the one about two old women who went to church?”

We looked at the old man in surprise; we had never seen him before. We bit. “No, you haven’t told us this one.”

The man replied . . . “Two old women went to church services one Sunday and afterwards the first said to the other, ‘You know, midway through the sermon my butt fell asleep.’ The other woman replied, ‘Yes I know. I heard it snore three times.’”

Alice and I looked at each other and just laughed. Where did that come from? Did he do that to everyone on the river?

On the same trip on the same day, we came around another bend in the river, and here’s what was presented to us:

A week later and on another path, this one a nature trail outside of Harbor Springs, Michigan, we were walking along and rounded another corner, and were met with the following:

And then around another bend:

As we move though life, we never know what’s around the next corner.  But one thing is for certain, if we don’t move forward, we’ll never know. And as we do move forward, we’ll likely be surprised by what’s there in wonderful ways. Especially if we’re open to receiving life’s blessings.

Move forward, in your actions, in your thoughts, in your relationships, and in everything you do, and look for happiness in every turn and around every corner. It’s there to find!

Wandering and pondering,
