Welcome to this week's issue of The Birthday Workbook!
In this issue, we hear from Travis Chua who wrote about his experience with Cerebral palsy (CP). CP is a condition affecting muscle tone, movement and motor skills, and hinders the body's ability to move in a coordinated and purposeful manner. He shares about his difficulty learning how to write and how physiotherapy, perseverance and patience helped him overcome his challenges.

Before you read the article:
Watch the following video.

Get into groups of 2-3 and discuss these questions:
  1. Why do people often think of people with disability as automatically inspiring?
  2. Make a list of three non-biological obstacles a person with disability could face in school.
  3. Think of how such obstacles can be removed.
Now read the following article:
Read on Mothership
Consider the following questions:
  1. How does Travis describe himself? What is the significance of using these three descriptors?
  2. Travis is honest about his frustration with the pain and aches of physiotherapy but is encouraged by his mother and his progress. Think about being 7 again and learning a difficult task. Are there any similarities?
  3. Do you think persons with disabilities can participate actively and meaningfully in society? Why or why not?
  4. Compare the mediums of writing and video in presenting the stories of Travis and Zach. How was technology allowed us to learn about the experiences of others?
  5. Accessibility features such as wheelchair ramps or subtitling for the deaf/hard-of-hearing benefit even the able-bodied. What are some that you use frequently?
