Welcome to this week's issue of the Birthday Workbook!

It's a brand new school year: a great time to catch up with old friends and meet new ones!

This week, we watch the short film, Kaya & Kopi, which won second prize in the Birthday Collective-ITE 2020 Video Awards Competition. In this film, two old friends reminisce about their shared childhood memories.

Watch the video carefully and answer the following questions.

  1. In your own words, describe Albert and Benny's friendship.
  2. Various objects are used in the film to symbolize Albert and Benny's friendship, including kopi, a soccer ball, their photograph album and kaya bread. Which symbol was the most effective for you and why?
  3. Why do you think kopi was served in a milk tin in the past?
  4. The film is shot largely in a sepia (reddish-brown) color scheme. What effect does this choice of color scheme achieve?
  5. What do you like about the film's soundtrack? How does it enhance the themes of the film?
  6. Watch the film from 1:54 to 2:12. How does Benny's reaction to the kopi change from when he is a child? How does this contrast convey the passing of time?
  7. Albert and Benny have good childhood memories of running around with paper planes, playing soccer and flying kites. How are your childhood memories similar and/or different?
