Latest News from Home of Comfort

Good afternoon everyone,
A number of people have very reasonably asked what impact the new lockdown will have on visiting in care homes.
I am very sorry but right at the moment we are not sure what the government intends. Unless I missed it, there was no mention of care settings in the PMs statement, and we have not been able to find any guidance, detailed statement or leaked info to the press, which tells us.

We hear rumours that there will be an update to the official 'care home visiting' guidance, but nobody knows when this will be. It is quite possible that the update won't come until after the lockdown starts on Thursday. (This possibly reflects major disagreement in the cabinet about how to balance the risks of visits against the risk of not having visits, or the fact that everything is being decided in something of a rush, or a bit of both.) We do not expect our local Director of Public Health to give us any new local guidance until the national rules are published, because she may well find herself on the 'wrong side' of the new rules, since she will not get any advance notice of what they are likely to say.

Sadly, for the time being, we are expecting that routine visits will have to stop after Wednesday this week, based on the general lockdown rules which will apply to all of us that prohibit us from going into someone else's home. We understand this will be very painful for all of our residents and loved ones, and we hope it will not be for long.

We hope that the PM's mention of rapid testing indicates that this may be made available to care settings in the very near future.

We will of course be continuing to keep the particular circumstances of every resident under very frequent review, and we will do our best to keep in touch with you all. Whether or not we have anything new to share with you, we intend to send another message on Wednesday. If you have any questions, suggestions or comments, please do let us know.

Take care everybody,
from Robin, Deepa and everyone at Home of Comfort
