April 16, 2021 - Celebrating Earth Day with a "Last Ditch Effort"!
photo: Example of a collaborative project with the Russell's Landing Home Owner's Association (HOA), Onondaga County Soil & Water Conservation District (OCSWCD), and the Skaneateles Lake Association (SLA) where after ditch improvements were made by the HOA, SLA & OCSWCD reduced exposed soil by cost-sharing on hydroseeding to establish vegetation with root structure.

Dear Friends of Skaneateles Lake-
As Earth Day (April 22nd) quickly approaches, the Skaneateles Lake Association (SLA) wanted to highlight what we all can do to support our watershed by being mindful of helping keep our ditches and culverts functioning well. Keeping trash and natural debris out of them will one, help keep trash, and the pollutants they can carry, out of the lake and two, aid in not having culverts clog up and cause additional runoff of nutrients over potential exposed soil pathways.
Feel free during this upcoming week and weekends to participate on your own and share before and after photos by emailing them to SLAPropertyPhotos@gmail.com.
A few safety tips:
Wear bright colors especially if you are on busy roads
Be mindful of sharp objects
Use a trash picker stick or grabber
Consider your safety first and avoid any unrecognizable suspicious items
If major items, please contact your local state, county, or municipal transportation office to inform if you live on a public road.
Also, SLA is developing a Watershed Improvement Program that focuses on supporting shared private road community interests and efforts to make improvements that would reduce nutrients from entering Skaneateles Lake. We are firstly gathering contact information and polling interest in the community. If this is of interest to you, please CLICK HERE to fill out an interest form that will help us with our planning efforts.
Lastly, please join us for "Lake Friendly Living Awareness Week" that will coincide with New York State's Water Week from May 2 - May 8, 2021. Thank you greatly to all the host lake organizations, the speakers, community partners and The Nature Conservancy for stepping up as an initial lead sponsor.
