Homelessness: New Report Shows Dire Forecast

According to a recent Economic Roundtable report, 30 MILLION American workers earn less than $13,560 a year –  and that was before COVID! Layoffs increased by more than TEN times in the U.S., and FIFTEEN times in California, and although some have returned to work, layoffs are still three times higher than before March 2020. An untold number of workers are now permanently separated from their jobs.

But here’s the kicker – even before COVID, millions of workers employed by restaurants, entertainment, retail, churches, colleges, agriculture and social services were considered “poverty employees” (those working part-time at minimum wage) – and the odds of becoming homeless are 23 times greater for these workers than for someone earning just $28,000 a year.

This study projects that over the next four years, the pandemic recession will cause chronic homelessness to increase 49% in the US, 68% in California, and a whopping 86% in Los Angeles County. It’s time to pull our heads out of the proverbial sand and find real solutions to this overwhelmingly obvious problem.
