Eviction Moratorium Part 2: A Mixed Bag

The CDC eviction moratorium briefly reached its expiration on July 31st. Despite the urging of housing advocates, activists and representatives, Congress took recess without extending the federal ban on evictions, putting pressure on states to speed up the distribution of $46.5 billion in rental assistance funds allocated to alleviate the financial burden of struggling renters and housing providers– only $3 billion of which has been disbursed so far.

Then on August 3rd, the CDC issued a new eviction moratorium, in a last-ditch effort to help keep millions in their homes as the delta variant spreads and states have been slow to release federal rental aid. This new order temporarily halts evictions in counties with “substantial and high levels” of virus transmissions, covering areas where 90% of the U.S. population lives and this goes through October 3rd.

As many as 15 million people still owe rent that is past due, possibly totaling up to $70 billion in unpaid rent around the country. Millions are still in urgent need of rent relief, and 17 months into the eviction moratorium, properties are more than needy for those rent payments. With the slow rollout of government rental assistance funds, it is more important than ever that nonprofits and private donors step up.

There are more ways to help RRF outside of donations. Here are some ideas:

  1. Introduce RRF to apartment associations, property management companies and other organizations that might like to partner with us.
  2. Send us a Video telling people why you support RRF that we can share
  3. Shop with Amazon Smile
  4. Spread the word. Talk about RRF on social media or forward this email

Here is our latest letter of appreciation.

“This grant allowed me to stay in my home during the pandemic. You took so much stress and fear away from the thought of becoming homeless during that time,” writes Morgan. “Thanks to the Colorado Apartment Association for making this grant possible!”
