THE CONVICTION OF DEREK CHAUVIN

The conviction of Derek Chauvin is the beginning of a realization that we must stop this criminal activity by police and begin to soul search our conscience for the strength to change in our relations with our fellow Americans.

The tragic and violent death of George Floyd challenges us in many ways.  His criminal death, the racism of the perpetrators, the underlying racism in our country, the apparent total disregard for human life, police brutality -- all of this bears witness to the fact that we need to face up to the call for radical change in America.

Americans like to think that the United States is the “greatest nation in the world.”  It is dangerous to believe one’s own publicity.  Rather we need to acknowledge that we are one of the most violent countries.  We have more guns than people and an increasing number of senseless shootings day and night.  Every day we learn of more white Americans joining the many and various racist groups.  And we need to ask Why?

What has happened to the America that used to welcome the stranger?  Now we attack people of color from African, Latin American, Asia and the Pacific Islands in increasing numbers.  Why are increasing numbers of our citizens joining various White Nationalists groups?

Our police departments must reconsider their role as peacemakers.  We must not tolerate our civil authorities turning a blind eye to the frequent killing of our people with guns by our police.  In many countries, the police officers do not carry guns. Violence begets violence.

As the time passes we need to keep in focus the continuing battle we face in making our country safe for every person.  We need to commit ourselves to defeat racism, promote respect for one another, and live a life conducive to our religious traditions.

Global Medical Missions Alliance

Global Medical Missions Alliance (GMMA) is a Christian organization that strives to mobilize aspiring health care professionals who are interested in medical missions and connect these students to health care professionals and mentors. The club organizes COVID-19 fundraisers, vitals workshops, and meetings featuring various healthcare professionals. While prayer and praise are incorporated into each meeting, members are not required to be Christian and are simply asked to be open to these practices.
