What is Purim?
The Jewish holiday of Purim begins ... and ends Tuesday, ... at sundown. It is celebrated the following day if you find yourself in the city of Shushan (modern day Shush, Iran) or a city that was walled during the time of Joshua (Jerusalem, Acre, Jaffa, and Tiberius).

Purim is a festive holiday that celebrates the salvation of the Jewish people in the ancient Persian empire from an evil plot to annihilate the Jews. We celebrate by reading the story in the book of Esther, having a festive meal, sending one another gift baskets that include triangle shaped cookies (called hamentachen or oznei-haman), and giving charity.

What is Ash Wednesday & Lent?
Lent is a 40 day season of prayer, fasting, almsgiving and reflecting on our life as followers of Jesus Christ.  Lent begins on Ash Wednesday and ends at sundown on Holy Thursday. It's a period of preparation to celebrate the Lord's Resurrection at Easter. During Lent, we seek the Lord in prayer by reading Sacred Scripture; we serve by giving alms; and we practice self-control through fasting. We are called not only to abstain from luxuries during Lent, but to a true inner conversion of heart as we seek to follow Christ's will more faithfully. We recall the waters of baptism in which we were also baptized into Christ's death, died to sin and evil, and began new life in Christ.

Many know of the tradition of abstaining from meat on Fridays during Lent, but we are also called to practice self-discipline and fast in other ways throughout the season. Contemplate the meaning and origins of the Lenten fasting tradition in this reflection. In addition, the giving of alms is one way to share God's gifts—not only through the distribution of money, but through the sharing of our time and talents.
Farwell Rabbi Danny
We are writing to share the bittersweet news that this semester will be Rabbi Danny’s last as the Jewish Chaplain and Hillel Director at the Claremont Colleges. Rabbi Danny and his husband, Rabbi Max Chaiken, have decided to move to Andover, MA where Max has accepted a position as the Rabbi of Temple Emanuel of Andover. Danny is not sure about his professional future, but he hopes to continue
working with college students. Though we are sad to see Rabbi Danny go, we wish him and Max the best in their new endeavors!

The colleges are committed to filling the position, and have already begun the search process to find the next Jewish Chaplain. Your voices will be essential during the process. Please stay tuned to learn about the ways to get involved and share your input with the search committee. Rabbi Danny will continue through the end of May, so please continue to reach out and join our Jewish and interfaith programs. At a future date, we will share plans to celebrate and say goodbye to Rabbi Danny.
