What is Sukkot?

The holiday of Sukkot (sue-COAT ) is the Jewish celebration of the fall harvest. Each year for seven days we move out of our permanent homes to dwell in a temporary structure called a Sukkah (sue-KAH). Exposed to nature, we recognize our dependence on God for sustaining us, and express our gratitude for the beauty of the world. The sukkah also symbolizes the dwellings the Israelites constructed after the exodus from Egypt, and God’s protection as they journeyed through the desert to the promised land. In ancient times Jews would make a pilgrimage to the Temple in Jerusalem to thank God for the harvest. Today we continue this tradition by waving the lulav (myrtle, willow, and palm fronds) and etrog (citron fruit) to give thanks for all that has grown, and to pray for another year of abundance.

Directly following the heavy themes of the High Holy Days, Sukkot gives us an opportunity to just relax and have fun. Given everything going on in the world, we could all really use one night off to enjoy a fun activity. Especially as we near another round of midterms you can use Sukkot as an opportunity for self-care.
