NEWSLETTER NO. 3 -  September 7, 2020

This Week...
In this week's newsletter we are highlighting the start of the Muslim Life program! Chaplain Imam Adeel is hosting weekly Halaqahs and Jummah prayers, as well as facilitating spiritual counseling. In addition, we are also highlighting Hindu, Buddhist, and Sikh student organizations.

A Message from Chaplain Imam Adeel Zeb
Welcome to Muslim Life at The Claremont Colleges! Muslim Life consists of an exciting mix of spirituality, socializing, and service. We have the Muslim Student Association (MSA), Muslim Chaplain, and the Muslim faculty and staff. Some of the major events we have are: Beach Day, boba runs, MSA Retreat, Orange County Halal Food Festival, Interfaith Dinner, community service Events in LA and Orange County, MSA hikes, Ramadan, Eid, Muslim Graduation and more! Weekly we have Halaqahs, Jummah Halal lunches, and MSA Meetings. We look forward to meeting you all virtually and hopefully one day in person Insha’Allah!

This month is the Holy Month of Muharram. Muslims commemorate the exodus of Moses and the Children of Israel from the slavery of Pharaoh. We also commemorate the death of Hussein, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad who was killed under the tyranny of Yazid.  Additionally, it is a time to reflect on the injustices in our current times. One year ago, a terrorist killed many Muslims in a mosque in Christ Church. In America, we also reflect on the systemic racism and police brutality against black and people of African descent. Speaking and standing up for justice is intrinsic to Islam and people of spirituality in general. There can be no spiritual peace, without communal justice.

Religious/Spiritual Student Organizations

Meet awesome student organizations!
This week we are highlighting the Buddhist, Hindu, and Sikh student organizations!

Learn more and get in contact with these groups here!
Claremont Colleges Buddhism
Claremont Colleges Buddhism is a student-led organization aiming to introduce students from all backgrounds to a wide range of Buddhist teachings, teachers, and schools. We hope to promote a better understanding of Buddhism across The Claremont Colleges via providing safe and welcoming learning spaces on and off campus through discussions, panels field trips, guest speakers, and innovative media.
Hindu Society
The Hindu Society is an organization that seeks to support students of the Hindu faith and create a forum in which to discuss the faith, celebrate its holidays and teachings, and provide service through various service days throughout the year.  As part of the McAlister Center for Religious Activities, Hindu Society stands in whole-hearted solidarity and support with all religious groups on campus and intends to support interfaith activities and cooperation.
Sikh Student Association
Welcome to the Claremont Colleges SSA! We strive to help create a community for Sikh Students at the 5Cs and to participate in Seva, Simran, Sangat, and Academics together. Join our group to keep up with the work we are doing on our campus and beyond!
SGI Buddhism
We are members of the Claremont Graduate University (CGU) community, contributing to the creation of a culture of peace and nonviolence based on the teachings of the Nichiren school of Mahayana Buddhism as practiced in the Soka Gakkai International-USA (SGI-USA). We aim to cultivate a network of friendship to support and encourage our fellow students to enjoy fulfilling, happy lives that brim with hope for the future.
SGI is a Buddhist network that actively promotes peace, culture, and education through personal exchange and social contribution. SGI members embrace Nichiren Buddhism, a dynamic philosophy grounded in the realities of daily life. This Buddhist practice leads to empowerment and inner transformation or "human revolution" which enables individuals to take responsibility for their lives and contribute to building a world where people of diverse cultures and faiths can live in peace.
