Maintenance Tips with Don Tombs

Hi, this month I want to talk a bit about the importance of the water box on all Putzmeister piston pumps as this is an area that is easily overlooked but plays a very important role in the life of your pump.

The water box is a steel housing which sits between the hydraulic dive cylinders and the concrete delivery cylinders and connects the cylinders together with a bolted link known as a dog bone due to its shape. The water box is filled  about 3/4 full with clean water which should be changed on a regular basis, some operators do it daily or weekly but alot simply forget about it until something goes wrong and then it starts costing money and time to fix the problem.

The water performs two jobs, the first being that if any slurry or concrete gets past the delivery cylinder cups the water will wash it off the cylinder walls and draw it back into the bottom of the water box where it can be drained and replaced with clean water this helping your piston cups and cylinder bores to last a lot longer. The second function of the water is to help cool the hydraulic oil temperature which it does by drawing the heat away from the hydraulic cylinder shafts and is responsible for removing 30% of the total heat, the remainder is done by the oil cooler and fan.

If the day is very hot and your pump is working very hard you can also help bring the oil temperature down by adding cold water to the water box while pumping which will help control the temperature but this is rare that you would need to do this. Also in freezing conditions it pays to drain the water overnight as the last thing you need is
a frozen water box first thing in the morning so just remember sometimes the
simple things are as important as the major things.
