Dogs that assist individuals with mobility is the first type of service animal that history records. However, the variety of animals that provide supports and services to individuals with different types of disabilities has grown.

To help understand this topic and the definitions of various types of assistance animals, we recently released a new Legal Brief on Individuals With Disabilities and Their Assistance Animals: A Brief History and Definitions. It is also available in large print.
