November Newsletter

Dear <<First Name>>,

Thank you for subscribing to the Americans with Disabilities Act National Network (ADANN) newsletter!

November is National Epilepsy Awareness Month (NEAM), Alzheimer’s Awareness Month, and American Diabetes Month. For 2019, the Epilepsy Foundation is promoting the importance of recognizing seizures and reviewing recommended first aid techniques using #StaySafeSide. For American Diabetes Month, in partnership with the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, this year’s focus is on the link between diabetes and cardiovascular disease with the theme “Take Diabetes to Heart”. To learn more about Alzheimer’s, the history of Alzheimer’s Awareness Month, and how you can celebrate, click this link.

In November we also celebrate National Family Caregivers Month. Caregivers play a pivotal role in the disability community and November is a time to recognize and honor family caregivers across the country.

As always, our ADA specialists are here to help. Contact us at 1-800-949-4232 (toll-free voice or TTY) or email us.

Leased Facilities [WEBINAR]
Federal agencies and the US Postal Service (USPS) must ensure that facilities they lease are accessible as required by the Architectural Barriers Act (ABA). Standards issued under the ABA, which apply to facilities funded by the federal government or USPS, provide minimum requirements for facilities or buildings newly leased by federal agencies or the USPS. These provisions address accessible routes, parking, toilet and bathing facilities, sales and service counters, joint-use areas, fire alarms, and other elements and spaces. Presenters will review these requirements and explain how they apply to leased facilities.

In honor of National Epilepsy Awareness Month (NEAM) we have decided to choose a throwback video for our Featured Content: our 2017 interview with Jessica Keenan Smith of Living Well with Epilepsy. Though a couple of years old, the video's themes of anti-discrimination, support in the workplace, reasonable accommodations, and the overall importance of the ADA to the epilepsy community hold strong.
