Friday 3 May - Week 2 - Space Week!

trans-spacer.gif Dear Parents

Your children have had the most wonderful Space Week over the past 5 days!  The assemblies have been a real highlight as well as the range of external and internal exhibits ranging from the Astrodome, Virtual Reality, Rocket Launching, and so on.  The week came to an amazing conclusion today as we gathered the children together in the Jubilee Hall to watch and listen to a brief message of support from Major Tim Peake, the first British European Space Agency astronaut.  His personal message to Holmwood House can be seen on our Facebook and Twitter feeds.   My sincere thanks to Mr Kershaw who has led the Science Department staff (Mr White, Mr Cook and Mrs Bradshaw) in a week of exciting ventures along with Mrs Bell who led in the Pre-Prep.  Lots of people have contributed to the success of the week, not least the 'actors' in the annual 'Whodunnit'.

We look forward to welcoming a new member of the front office team on Tuesday next week.  Jane Sadler will be at the reception hatch and answering the phones and emails from 10am each day through to 6.30pm to complement the superb jobs done by Abigail and Fi.  I will be in touch with you later this term regarding our communications processes and the improvements we are planning.  This is a good opportunity to publicly praise all our wonderful frontline staff including Mrs Reynolds and Mrs Leigh in the surgery.

Last night's pre-tour concert by the Chamber Choir in St Albright's CHurch, Stanway, was a real treat.  Mr Cortes, our Director of Music, has worked tirelessly with the 9-13 year olds who, next week, will perform in Reims Cathedral as well as the Madeleine Church in Paris. We look forward to hearing all about it.  Bon chance! Bon voyage!

I hope everyone has a lovely, if a little chilly, Bank Holiday Weekend!

With best wishes

Alexander Mitchell

Water

This week, Water’s Element meeting was held on the main field due to the good weather and the need for a little more space for the activity we had planned…

‘Space Week’ has been absolutely amazing so far and Mr Kershaw has been working tirelessly along with his team to fit in loads of incredible activities including: the ‘Train Like an Astronaut’ programme in the Jubilee hall at lunch times, the ‘Planet Trail’ located in and around the garden block this week and of course, the murder mystery which has been gathering suspense since last Friday's assembly. We have all voted and the Year 6s have been hunting for clues on who the murderer could be all week, and now all that's left is the big reveal! There was a space-themed goody bag for everyone, too!

Well done to Lana B and Joseph H for winning the senior and junior stars this week, keep collecting everyone, we’re aiming for the star cup! Also, a big well done to everyone who played in matches this week and good luck to all those playing next week.

For our space-themed Element activity this week, we played ‘Planet Dash’ in which everyone participated. Inflatable replicas of all the planets (plus the moon and sun!) were positioned at different intervals on the field and everyone ran to a planet of their choice. The planets were called out at random and whoever was on that planet was out. Well done to our winner, Harry G!

I hope you’ve all had a fun with Space Week.

Remember fishes, just keep swimming!

Margot F

trans-spacer.gif Boarding
trans-spacer.gif
trans-spacer.gif This week in Boarding we have had fun with a space theme. On Monday, the Years 4 and 5 boarders enjoyed a space-themed cinema evening watching 'Monsters vs Aliens'.

On Wednesday, the Year 8 boarders had a talk from Mr Vickers about the moon landing and his work with astronauts. He brought in some artefacts to do with space travel, including a virtual reality moon model, some of the food brought back from space by Tim Peake and some replica space suits!

On Thursday some intrepid boarders tried their hand at Astronaut cooking. It was a little messy, but tremendous fun.

trans-spacer.gif Pre-Prep Space Competition
trans-spacer.gif
trans-spacer.gif We were very impressed with the imaginative and creative space models entered into the Pre-Prep competition as part of Space Theme Week.  It was very difficult to choose winners and we hope that all those who entered had a lot of fun designing and making their models over the Easter holiday.

trans-spacer.gif Chess
Charles D, Amani L and Charlotte G all took part in the Delancey Chess Megafinal last weekend. Charles and Amani played very well in their first chess tournament, drawing the game they played against each other and scoring a creditable 1.5 and 2.5 points respectively out of 6 games. Charlotte won 4 of her 6 games, which put her in 1= place for U10 girls on points, and qualified her for the next round, the Gigafinal.

Athletics
Henry D took part in the U13s London Mini Marathon. On Birdcage Walk he was leading with 600m to go, he got delayed/slow/distracted passing Buckingham Palace as he was feeling sick! He had a good sprint finish, to go from 3rd place to 2nd, but left it too late to take first. Well done, Henry! We are very proud of you!

trans-spacer.gif Babies
Babies enjoyed investigating our new ‘lock and latch’ board in the garden. We have also been mark-making using pens with play-dough.

Bluebells
We have lots of exciting changes to our garden over Easter.  We have more AstroTurf with balancing logs and a fantastic new mud kitchen.  As the weather is warmer the reading tent is also back in the garden. The children have enjoyed lots of role play opportunities in the secret garden and mud kitchen.

Poppies
This week we have had lots of fun visiting the school and participating in their Science Week.  Also, Poppies were absolutely delighted to hear that Emma, our Language and Literacy Co-ordinator has welcomed to the world Jack Joe (JJ) Watson, born on Sunday 21 April, weighing 8lb 13oz. We are all looking forward to meeting JJ soon.
