trans-spacer.gif From the Headmaster...

trans-spacer.gif Dear Parents

I hope you all had a lovely half term break and that you are fully back into the swing of term, which has already got off to a very fast pace.

With several variations of winter weather in one week, it has been remarkable that there has been so little disruption to games fixtures.  Our teams have been characteristically resilient and it was a pleasure to celebrate in assembly and later meet in my study, this week's Team of the Week; the U13 Hockey As.  Well done, boys!

I visited St George's School in Harpenden, Hertfordshire earlier this week.  St George's is a state boarding school offering free tuition but paid-for full boarding.

We are looking forward to the Years 4 & 5 production next week.  Mrs Mitchell is working hard directing the hilarious and highly entertaining 'What a Knight!' to which you are all invited next Friday evening at 7pm.  The production week will see rehearsals transform into performances with every child involved in some way or another. Break a leg!

Tonight is the first FOHH Quiz Night in a very long time.  We have an excellent number of families attending and I am looking forward to putting them through their paces from the Question Master's chair!  My thanks in advance to the Friends for their ever-up-beat approach, hard work and commitment.

We started our latest Element meeting with notices from Rafa and Jasper. Everyone was really excited about half term and were reminded about World Book Day on the 5th and ‘Cops and Robbers’ boarding night on the 2nd. We also had Progress badges for lots of people so well done everyone who was awarded one!

This week everyone did really well with Stars, and that was shown by in assembly on Friday when Air won the Star Cup! Well done, to everyone for collecting lots of show ups. Keep it up!

In our matches, everyone had fun and played well in all matches even though conditions were not ideal.

There were a few birthdays during the week and lots of people had birthdays in half term, Happy Birthday to everyone!.

Our activity was ‘The Best Paper Aeroplane’. We chose one person from each year and they had five minutes to make one, then see who's would fly the farthest. It was a tough competition, but in the end Year 5 were the winners.

trans-spacer.gif The Ring Cycle
Year 5 have been studying imagery, as part of their work on poetry this term. They linked this to imagery within Norse Poetry, in particular Beowulf, and to imagery within music, working on the imagery in, what is probably the most famous and incredible opera cycle ever written - Wagner’s Ring Cycle.

The Ring Cycle comprises 15 hours of wonderful music telling a magical tale based on Norse mythology.

The reward of a chocolate orange was offered to any Year 5 who listened to the full 15 hours of the Ring Cycle (and had their parents’ verification).

This week, a chocolate orange goes to - Francis B.

Edward R competed in his second European Tour Golf event this season (having won the first one a few weeks ago) over 2 days at Goodwood Downs Golf Club in Sussex.

He played some brilliant golf and ended up winning both Day One, Day Two, the overall championship and even the ‘Nearest the Pin’ prize!

Winning this event has now qualified him for the ‘Champion of Champions’ event in Ireland in 2021, which includes Champion Junior Golfers from all over the world.

Babies enjoyed exploring the pancake cooking tuff tray, investigating the different ingredients. We even had pancakes for our after snack including Vegan ones.
Bluebells
In Bluebells this week we have enjoyed playing group games, practising our turn-taking, colour recognition, and counting.  We loved playing in the snow on Thursday, it was very exciting, just not enough to build a snowman!
Poppies
A big welcome back to those of you who have come back from February half term. I hope you have all had a lovely week. This week in the Poppies room, we have been enjoying a week based around cooking activities. Our favourite so far has been trying pancakes with a variety of toppings to celebrate Pancake day. We have liked syrup or sugar with lemon and mixed fruit. It was very yummy! We extended this by using ingredients used for pancakes with utensils as a tuff tray activity and did lots of baking. We are looking forward to making milkshakes and fruit skewers later on in the week. We have shown lots of interest in construction by doing lots of building with wooden blocks creating structures to build and balance. We have enjoyed dressing up as builders with helmets and jackets! It’s been a very exciting and fun week so far.
