trans-spacer.gif Dear Parents,

As we near the end of what has been a challenging and exciting year, I would like to take the opportunity to mention colleagues who will be leaving us soon.  Our thanks to Mrs Ashton, Pre-Prep PE and Games, who leaves us after two years and to Naomi Grout who leaves our Accounts Department to take up a role in a local secondary school.  Mrs Slaven has decided to leave the wonders of the Year 1 classroom to do a number of things which include travelling with her husband and training her puppy to be a therapy dog! Mrs Julier leaves us after 6 years to take up a teaching role at Finborough.

After 7 years, Mrs Deacon leaves us and will be teaching older pupils in a school in Ipswich from September.  Her development of the religious studies curriculum has transformed this aspect of learning at Holmwood.  Mr Guy's passionate and committed approach to geography over 12 years has been legendary and we thank him for his sterling work in this area. Mr Smith joined Holmwood in 1998 and has been teaching history as well as games since then.  We thank him for his committed approach to his classes and teams over these 21 years.

Mr Snell's phased retirement sees him move from the classroom to the piano teaching room after 13 years of producing some wonderful concerts and productions but I think we may yet see him in the Jubilee Hall again!

Science at Holmwood is a huge strength and we thank Mr Kershaw for his amazing work leading this hugely important subject in the school over 18 years. This year's Space Week, one of many science weeks over the years, is testament to his powerful effect on children's understanding of the world in which we live.  Mrs Wild has been teaching maths at Holmwood since 1994 and has been leading this area for many years.  Her development of the times tables challenge in recent years has really bolstered the children's number skills.  Her role as a tutor has also been hugely valued by many pupils and parents over the years for which we thank her.

Miss Penn leaves us after 25 years at Holmwood.  Her commitment to the Pre-Prep classes as well as her excellent PE and Games work is hugely valued.  Her final Pre-Prep Sports Day earlier this term was a wonderful event which showed her compassion for the children and her real love of sport for children at this young age.

Mrs Taylor celebrated 30 years at Holmwood earlier this term.  As a classroom teacher and Head of Pre-Prep, her involvement in the development of the school has been immense and we are hugely grateful to her for her wonderful contribution.  As a member of the senior leadership team, Mrs Taylor has been a loyal and committed colleague for whom I have a great deal of respect.  In September, Mrs Taylor, I believe, will be somewhere off the Croatian coast!

With best wishes

Alexander Mitchell

Air
This week was our last ever Element meeting as Year 8s, and also some other's last meeting as well. Mr Cook has been an amazing help throughout the year.

We wished some members of staff a fond farewell: Mr Guy; we are 100% sure has been everyone's favourite geography teacher! Mrs Julier has been a wonderful tutor for all ages. Mrs Deacon, who has had many laughs at this school, and Mrs Slaven, who has been with Air for 6 years. we all hope they have the best of times outside Holmwood.

We kicked off the Element meeting with Henry’s banging tunes that he has constantly maintained all year! We then had a report of the year by Harry O and a charity speech by Davina and Henry. Louis chipped in with some wise words for the Year Rs. We then handed out the awards to Pre-Prep and Prep, both having some amusing ones chucked in. We ended up giving the staff some well-earned presents and wished everyone a lovely summer!

Water
In our final Element meeting we celebrated and reminisced all the events and activities we have participated in and achieved. Most recently this term Water have won the Swimming Gala, Sports Day, the Year 8 debate, the bridge building challenge among other fantastic events.  Well done, and thank you to all involved.

We also celebrated all the individual efforts and amazing progress made by all the pupils in the Element this year. I always love seeing and hearing about everyone's achievements!

Coming soon the Year 8s will be performing their production - ‘Little Shop of Horrors’. This has been a great process and we would like to thank Mr Cortes, Mrs Mayhew and Miss Denny for all their hard work.

The production sees the final installment of our Challenge Weeks which Miss Godman has put on for us. It has been great fun and I CANNOT wait to see which Element has won overall.

We recently had our Year 8 formal, the pictures are brilliant and we had such a good time.

We were sad to see that next year Mr Lesiak will be moving to Air, they obviously need him to win the staff race on Sports Day!

I would like to thank all my fellow Year 8s who have done an amazing job this year helping me with everything. Special mention to Martha, and also to Margot and Harry for their great work for the charities. (Over £1100!)

I have such a good time this year and hope you all enjoyed it!

THANK YOU EVERYONE

trans-spacer.gif Year 7 Boarding Taster Evening
On Tuesday evening, the Year 6s enjoyed their Year 7 boarding taster evening. It was enormous fun from beginning to end, with a delicious supper, followed by Year 7 quantities of tuck, games on the field and a water balloon fight. The happy, tired and wet boarders were allowed a Year 7 bed time. They were excellent company throughout! Next week it is the turn of the Year 7 to have a taste of what Year 8 boarding is like.

trans-spacer.gif Year 5  Geography
trans-spacer.gif
trans-spacer.gif Over the course of the summer term, pupils in Year 5 have been learning about one of our most precious resources - water. Not only have the pupils been finding out some amazing facts about our use of water (did you know that it takes more than 2,500 gallons of water to make one pair of jeans?) they have also been addressing some pretty challenging philosophical questions, e.g. Do we have the right to unlimited free water? This work ties in well with their current topic in PSHCE - Human Rights. As part of their work in geography, the pupils were asked to design a logo which promoted the sensible use of water.

Hannah and Sebastian Lingard and Lyra Doyle perform at the Art Centre this weekend with excellent drumming from Hannah, singing keyboard and drums from Lyra and Saxophone from Seb.  Amazing opportunity for Holmwood musicians.
Swimming
Harry P and Jack P took part in the Great East Swim last week, held at Alton Water. Harry swam the half mile open water event, in which he broke his PB, finishing in 22.13 minutes and coming 100th out of 180. Jack swam the 250m event, again beating his PB finishing in 6.33 minutes coming 33rd out of 86 racers. They really enjoyed it, well done!

Bluebells
This week the children have been really interested in exploring the ICT toys we have in the room.

Poppies
In Poppies this week we have been very busy with a whole range of activities which all of the children have thoroughly enjoyed. These include making shark hats and making stained glass window fish. We have also found some lovely mint growing in our garden, which the children loved smelling.

Fantastic work done by our nursery staff! Thanks to all the nursery parents for their reviews which helped secure this award. Did you know you can also leave a review right here on our Facebook page for the main school too? #HHSuccess

It is great to see Water's charity fundraising efforts mentioned in today's Gazette. Well done on the money raised! #HHYear8 #HHSuccess

ANOTHER Holmwood success - former pupil, Micky Shillington, has been appointed Head Boy at Stowe for the coming year - very well done to him too!

These former Year 8 Holmwoodians have all gone on to achieve great success with new leadership roles in their senior schools from September 2019. Congratulations to them all on well-deserved positions of responsibility! #HHSuccess

It seems as if everyone wanted to get their hands on the Prep school Sports Day cup today! A brilliant day with Year 8 pupil, Henry Dover, breaking several school records - well done to him and all the other pupils who took part! #HHSport #HHSuccess

The final music extravaganza of the year has taken place - the Prep school summer concert! Hosted by the Year 8s, there were lots of fabulous choirs, songs and numerous Rock Bands - what talent! #HHMusic
