Cottesloe Tennis Club: July 2019

Thursday 4 July: Monthly Evening Barbecue (first Thursday)
Saturday 20 July: Monthly Evening Barbecue (3rd Saturday). Come and toast a moment of history:
50 years ago on this day in 1969 at 20:17 UTC, Apollo 11 Lunar Module 'Eagle' landed on the moon.
Six hours later at 02:56:15 UTC on 21 July, Neil Armstrong proclaimed "That's one small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind", as he stepped on the moon.
Buzz Aldrin joined him 19 minutes later.

Western Australia is set to serve up top women’s tennis when the final of the Federation Cup, the world's largest annual international women's tennis competition, is staged in Perth for the first time since 1971.

The International Tennis Federation announced the final would be held on home soil after team Australia, captained by WA’s Alicia Molik and led by Australia’s No.1 tennis player and recent French Open champion Ashleigh Barty, led the Australian team to a win over full-strength Belarus in the April Fed Cup semi-final in Brisbane.

The Australian team, including Ash Barty, Samantha Stosur and Daria Gavrilova, will take on France’s finest in November. This final is a huge result for Australia, having last reached a final 26 years ago in 1993 and last winning a Fed Cup final in 1974 in the days of Evonne Goolagong playing.

Strong support is expected for the Australian team and this final. Tickets are available via this link:

Report provided by Libby Mussared
The winter weekend pennant league has been a bit of a topsy-turvy one, with the weather causing a few issues! However at the end of Round 7 these are the results for all our teams:
  • Women's Division 1 (= 4th)
  • Men's Division 1 (1st)
  • Men's Division 6 (6th)
All remain in finals contention with three rounds to go. Matches are played on the hard courts, starting at 1.00 pm and the teams would love support!

Follow this link to see current results of all of Cottesloe's teams:

Report provided by Katrina Chisholm

With just one more round to go before the winter break, we have eight of our mid-week pennant teams sitting comfortably in the top four of their respective divisions. For most teams there will only be one more match in late July before what looks like being a very busy finals season for our Club.

To be eligible to play in the final rounds you will need to have played four matches in the qualifying rounds of the season, which can include a washed-out or incomplete match as long as you were named as a team member. Those teams with a ‘Bye’ in their division need only to have played in three matches.

Finally, well done to all players for adapting to the new Book-a-Court system. Your comments on how it is operating and any improvements that may assist your pennant playing experience, would be welcomed.

Quiz Night report provided by Frances Barron:

A fun night was had by all at the club on Saturday night 22 June, with 100 members and guests attending. The quiz part of the evening was run by the 'Mad Professor' from Swansea - aka Grant O'Connell, who also happens to be our club licensee - which is a bit of a worry given his 'performance'!
Of course there were others who also acted up, creating laughter from many watching their antics as cross-dressers. They shall remain nameless, but the photos might give them away!

When not testing our brains, there were games to indulge in - coin throwing to land near the whisky and gin prizes (a bit like bowls), true or false guessing, and head/tails/one of each.
The quiz was won by the Amy Oen team of the Williams, Barrons, Dibbs and Karen Parfitt. Perhaps more fortunate was the winner of the cash raffle, Judy Gillespie.

Thanks to Tennis Approach for donating prizes, to the Social Committee for the brilliant organisation, and to Ruth Maitland who gave significant support to Jack Harrison in the bar. The strong attendance and work by volunteers resulted in a $474 profit for the club. Thanks to all.
