Provided by Karen Meredith, Director House & Grounds:

Following on from approval of the plans created to repair the storm-damaged area on the north side of the clubhouse, work is well and truly underway:
  •  The new pathways are all completed.
  • The limestone wall facing Court 11 is finished - making a great seat for viewing matches - and new turf is about to be laid in front of the new wall.
  • We are still waiting for approval for shade sails. Everything has been ordered and made for the sails. Once approval is received the sails will be erected.
  • Planting the trees is the last item. Once the sail shades are in place we will then position the trees. A special thank-you is extended to those members who donated a tree.
  • A new bike rack, which will accommodate 10 bikes, has been ordered.
During this exercise the club has been the beneficiary of the ultimate recycling. A club member requested and was given the nod, to take some of the old slabs. It turns out that these originally came from the Cottesloe Golf Club, then to CTC, and now to the new garden shed she is building.

Libby Mussared, Weekend Pennant Co-ordinator:

Weekend tennis kicks off again this weekend with Round 9. Five rounds until the finals start on 21 March!

This week the Women’s State League plays North Beach at home. As always they would love your support! Remaining fixtures for the year are Hensman Park (home), RKPTC (away), Peppermint Grove (home), Blue Gum (home) and North Beach (away).

Our Men’s State League Team take on Wembley Downs in an away match. They then play Hensman Park (away), Peppermint Grove (home), RKPTC (away), APTC (away), before finishing the season with a bye.

All our Saturday teams remain in finals contention, with some in line for home finals!

On Sunday, Craig Palmer's Division 1 team is hoping to keep their number one ladder position to secure a home semi-final, while Vic Bruce’s Division 1 team is firmly in second place.

Hopefully the Australian Open will bring on some inspired tennis in the remaining few rounds. We look forward to seeing you supporting CTC.

Katrina Chisholm, Mid-Week Pennant Co-ordinator:

The summer pennant season resumes this weekend - Saturday 1 February - with just six more rounds to play before final positions are determined. We currently have seven of our 15 mid-week pennant teams sitting within a ‘top four’ ladder position in their respective competitions, with a couple more teams poised to challenge for a finals berth.

To be eligible to play in the final rounds, team members must have played at least five matches in qualifying rounds. We have 15 mid-week teams in the following competitions. If you have any interest in playing, or filling in for any of these teams, please let the Pennants Co-ordinator or respective Team Captain know.
  • Monday Night Women’s Fast4: Divisions 1 and 2 (two teams)
  • Tuesday Night Mixed Doubles: Division 4
  • Wednesday (morning) Women’s 55+ Doubles: Divisions 1 and 2
  • Wednesday Night Men’s Doubles: Divisions 2, 3 and 4
  • Thursday Night Women’s Doubles: Divisions 1, 3, 4 (two teams); 5 and 7

We want you, we need you - even for an hour - it all helps - please!

Club sponsor Sandalford is inviting members to join in an informal wine tasting at the club from 6.00 - 7.00pm on Saturday 15 February (also the evening of the CTC Saturday barbecue). Hosted by Mark Leake, Brand Manager for Sandalford, join your fellow members in sampling wines - possibly from the Margaret River and Estate Reserve ranges - and maybe discovering a new taste!

This is also an opportunity to order some wines. Remember, Sandalford has an offer available for members until 30 June - 25% off website orders of six or more bottles. Visit and enter TENNIS2020.

We hope you'll support this venture by Sandalford, long-term CTC sponsor - and perhaps stay on for the club's bring-your-own barbecue.
Phil and Frances would like members to join them for twilight tennis and a BYO barbecue on Friday 21 February from 4.00pm.

About to return to New Zealand, Phil and Frances would appreciate having this opportunity to say thanks and 'au revoir' to all their tennis friends.

Come along and wish them luck! Bring meat and salad, and the Barrons will provide dessert.

This two-week national event, staged in January at the old and new Busselton tennis clubs as well as Bunbury, saw a number of CTC members join the large number of entrants from interstate and overseas.

Four Cottesloe players - Mervyn Hardie, Jack Harrison, Buster Braddock and Derry Walker (pictured below) - were part of a team that finished as runner-up in the '75 & Over' group. Together with three players from Busselton and one from Canberra, the team was beaten convincingly in the final by a very strong team from NSW who went through the early rounds undefeated.

Ken Adam also competed in another team in the same division of '75 & Over', the team earning 4th place.

A WA 'Over 60s' team that included CTC members, Peter O'Dea, Tony Luttrell, Rob Prouse and Peter Bierwirth, along with colleague Mike Tindal, finished on top after the round-robin format, but lost the final to the South Australian team (2).

The Editor has been told that club members, Rob Wilde and Laurence Pace, also competed in the team's event of the tournament.

POD & President Anne Williams with some of the CTC Social Committee

Anne Williams, our President, had this to say:
"Thank you to Pam Morley for spear-heading the arrangements for this year's Australia Day ceremony and barbecue, assisted by Karen Meredith, Frances Barron, Judy Curran, Jane Hope and Carmel Wright. Thank you also to all the Social Committee for all their work over recent years. This group, that also included Gloria Jernakoff, Cheryl Hoskin and Suzanne Lemmey, have done a wonderful job organising and hosting our social events.

Especially appreciated were efforts to provide the canteen for the National Junior Grass Court Championships last October. The funds raised by the canteen were used to provide our wonderful new television set.

Thank you to all involved for your generous contribution to the life of the club over the past few years.
As the decade ends, two significant contributors to the CTC Social Committee have decided to 'retire' - Pam Morley and Karen Meredith - thank you both for all you have done.

You cannot imagine the number of applications for the recently advertised role of CTC 'Social Director'!!  As expected the culling was arduous, but with an end result that is very satisfying. Our President is therefore delighted to announce the appointment of 'two for the price of one' with Jane Hope and Judi Coffey jointly taking on the role.
Jane (left) & Judi (right)

Jane has been a CTC member for 25 years! She has been heavily involved with the Royal Flying Doctor Service for years, as President and in many other roles organising functions. Jane's expertise has been apparent with her contribution to the CTC Social Committee in recent years, along with holding the position of 'Social Director' at Claremont Tennis Club for two years in an earlier time.

Judi has also been a CTC member for years - 26 in fact - since 1992. This has included playing pennants, and winning at times, for something like 16 years! 10 years ago Judi, with Rachel Thomas, was the joint CTC Social Director for three years. We remember amazing events such as the Oscars, the Casino Night and the memorable 30 Year Tribute to POD - described by POD as "better than  my wedding!"

It seems that we're in good hands. But two people can't deliver alone. Any member, young or older, interested in contributing ideas or some time to the Social Committee, please have a chat to the dynamic duo - you'd be very welcome.

Derek Walker has very generously donated a compact and very practical ice maker for the bar. This has made creating ice and the serving of drinks, much faster and easier - and no plumbing is required! Derry, thanks so much.

The group of members that play on Tuesday afternoon (pictured above) has donated $900 to the Salvation Army Bushfire Appeal. The 'kitty' money was to be spent on the annual knees-up, but the group thought it more appropriate that it go to those affected by the fires.
The Salvos sent a letter thanking us for our 'amazing gift', while adding "Whether it's a safe place to sleep, respite during disaster, a warm meal or just listening in times of loneliness, the Salvos will now be able to further help Australians in need."

As mentioned in the January issue, Rod Stewart will be performing at Sandalford in the Swan Valley on 17 October - one night only. Now is the time to declare your interest in attending (naturally subject to the cost of the tickets).

By Sunday 1 March, please place your name on the list on the club noticeboard, indicating the number of people in your group and whether group transport (a bus) to and from the venue is of interest to you.

Once the club organisers know the number of people interested in attending the concert, a group ticket price will be negotiated.

The first of the polo shirts with the logo have arrived. We also have white and navy caps. Shirt orders are still being taken via Tricia:
  • Collared polo shirts / short sleeves / white or navy - $30.00
  • T-shirts / short sleeves / white or heather navy - $20.00
  • T-shirts / long sleeves / white only - also available
  • Caps in white or navy, with the club logo - $15.00
