If you have a story to tell, or a photo - related to tennis in general, our club or CTC members - please email these to Judy, the Editor, by the 27th of the month -

If we want to have a maximum number of grass courts available, AND maintain them at their excellent standard, then we all need to do our bit by abiding by the rules set by POD, our expert groundsman:
  • Please do not play on any of the grass courts until the dew has dried in the morning as this damages the grass. The courts are usually dry by 9.30am.
  • If a net is down, please leave it down and play on a court that has the net set up. The nets are down on courts that need rest.
  • You may put up a net on a resting court only if there are no other grass courts available that have a net set up.
  • Please use the courts furthest from the clubhouse first.
  • To ensure even wear and tear on courts, you may be asked to move to another court.
Many thanks in advance for your contribution to keeping our courts in top shape!

Members, on days when there's been rain and you're wondering if the CTC grass courts are open or closed, check the CTC website - - a message in yellow on the home page will state if the grass courts are closed.

The decision is made by POD, usually by 12.00pm - 1.00pm, and is based on the weather and the state of the grass at that time. You may have to check the website more than once.
Why are the Courts Closed - You Can Still See the Lines!
'Grass Courts Closed' means Closed
- to All Players!

... and we complain about wet courts!

Anne Williams, CTC President
Tennis West is seeking nominations from members with competition experience for the newly formed 'Competitions Committee'. Please consider if you could contribute. The commitment is not extensive - with approximately four meetings per year, and the need to respond to other matters promptly as required. This newly formed committee has responsibilities which include:
  • Scheduling and delivering leagues and tournaments
  • Reviewing the Rules of Competition
  • Effective communication with clubs and players
  • Ensuring there are opportunities for a broad range of participants
Cottesloe Tennis Club has one of the largest number of teams in Tennis West’s League Competition, with many members having experience of leagues over many years, and also with children who compete.
If you are one of those members who'd be willing to spare some time to contribute to our sport, please chat to Anne Williams: 0417 985 179. Nominations need to be in by Friday 6 August, so please don’t delay!

Katrina Chisholm - Mid-Week Pennant Coordinator:
It’s the ‘business end’ of the winter season for our pennant (League) teams. We wish the very best to the following mid-week teams that made their final four as they battled their opponents, and some inconvenient wintery weather which is playing havoc with scheduling. Finals fixtures are available through the CTC website at the following link: - pennants-link
  • Monday Night Men’s Fast4, Div. 4: (Rothwell 2nd)
  • Tuesday Twilight Women’s, Div. 1: (Keaney 1st & Knapp 4th)
  • Wednesday Morning Women’s Doubles, Div 1: (Atkins 3rd)
  • Thursday Night Women’s Doubles, Div. 3: (Wise 1st)
  • Friday Morning Women’s Fast 4, Div. 1: (Medhurst 1st & Flipo 4th)
Tennis West’s surprise announcement of a ‘Spring Slam Doubles League’ created some interest, but with an extension of the winter season through poor weather and a COVID lockdown in early July, it seems many are prepared to wait until the summer season commences in mid-October to resume competitive tennis. Nominations for the summer season will open in coming weeks and close on 15 September 2021.
One day this might be a CTC State Grade or Pennant Team!
It's not! It's the 2021 Australian Olympic Team in Tokyo. (Lt to Rt:)
Ajla Tomljanovic, Alicia Molik (Captain, Billie Jean King Cup - was Fed Cup),
Storm Sanders (ex CTC State Grade player), Ash Barty, Ellen Perez & Sam Stosur

With our membership now at 686 and counting, we can be proud of how well our club is faring in these tricky times. We are especially happy to welcome new members from the young adult workforce and equally keen to ensure that you become integrated into the management of the club.

The AGM will be held on 23 September, and we're asking members to consider nominating for a committee role. The committee usually meets once a month for about 1½ hours, and uses email and WhatsApp for efficient additional communications.

The Management Committee comprises 10 voluntary roles, with a proposal for the additional new 'Pennant Director' role to be made permanent at the AGM. There is a description of each role in the Club By-Laws:

Maybe you are interested in helping the club and nominating to join this team? Feel free to contact me by phone or email, or any committee member, to learn more. Anne

Jane Ward, Captain:

The first online Peer Review has been completed. The percentage of members responding indicates we will proceed with online reviews. Thanks for the feedback received - another review will follow Opening Day, which allows time for comment and for multiple grade input from social players.

Reminder: Members, it's important that you ensure your email / contact details are up to date with the club so you can be notified of any social grading reviews and any other information.

Sunday 3 October - Sunday 10 October
  • Sunday 3 October: Set up
  • Monday 4 October: Player's draw & official practise
  • Tuesday 5 October Onward: Tournament play
  • Sunday 10 October: Trophy presentation & conclusion of tournament

Despite the current difficulties facing NSW due to COVID, Tennis Australia plans to hold the National Junior Grass Court Championships in the October school holidays, as long as players can travel to WA from the majority of other States. Therefore there's a real likelihood that the tournament will be held as planned at our club, so we need to proceed in our 'Call for Volunteers and Visitor Hosts'.
Naturally if circumstances change due to COVID, everyone will be notified.
Tournament Volunteers: Volunteers, both men and women, are required from Sunday to Sunday throughout the tournament for court set up and dismantling (umbrella, chairs, eskies, signage, fence shade cloth etc.), tasks during the event including tidying up of clubhouse/outside, daily canteen duties, dismantling and clean up. A comprehensive list of duties is available from the Tournament Volunteer Coordinator.
Willing to Help? Please contact Anthea McGrath, Tournament Volunteer Coordinator, initially via email:

Visitor Hosting: Provision of accommodation to players, guardians and coaches is not an official tournament benefit. However it would be appreciated if any members of our club could offer one or two accommodation rooms for the duration of the tournament. Hosts are not be expected to provide transport for their guests.
Interested in Hosting a Visiting Player or Coach? Please contact Anne Williams, CTC President: 0417 985 179.

From Tennis Approach:

Coaching: Term 3 coaching programs have now commenced. Anyone wanting to book into either our Junior or Adult group classes can do so online through our website:

School Holiday Clinics: Our school holiday clinics were held from 5 - 23 July and were a great success. Even with the unfavourable weather, the kids were able to enjoy three hours of tennis and indoor activities / games each day.

ANZ Tennis Hot Shots Tournament: On Saturday 17 July some of our best 12/under Juniors competed in an ANZ Tennis Hot Shots Tournament hosted by Peppermint Grove Tennis Club. All our junior players did very well, with CTC winning both the Orange and Green Ball Events.
Congratulations to Isobel Wood (Winner: Green Ball), Sara-Jayne Lau (Runner Up: Green Ball) and Nathan Hew (Winner: Orange Ball) on a great tournament.
Nathan Hew (Lt) - Winner, Orange Ball Event

Isobel Wood (Lt) - Winner, Green Ball Event
Sara-Jayne Lau (Rt) - Runner-Up

Junior Pennants: Our six Junior Winter Pennant teams have now completed their regular fixtures and will play their semi-final matches on the weekend. Good luck to those teams competing in finals.
We have a new face at the Sets Desk - Claudia Khan. Claudia has taken on the role of Reserve Sets Coordinator to take the place of Hillet and Zane when they have other commitments.
President Anne Williams & ex President Phil Barron, as he returns to NZ - Phil & Frances will revisit WA in November
