On the Trail to Bethlehem

90 miles. This is a long way to travel with my pregnant wife, he thought. It will be five days at least. The trail is rough and dangerous – what route should I take? How will she hold up so near to the Due Date. Dear God, please be with us.

What a remarkable nine months it has been, he considers as he assists her up a steep and rocky portion of the Trail. Just nine months earlier he learned the devastating news that his betrothed was with child. How he loved her, how thrilling the thought of spending his life with her, how peaceful it was so to be in her presence, so pure, so tender, so full of faith and joy. But now this. His thoughts swirled: How could this have happened? How could I have gotten her so wrong. Who did this to her? What did I do wrong? What do I do now? God, where are you in all this?

His world was turned upside down. He remembers those early days and the anguishing thoughts that took him over the edge of deciding something inconceivable. I will do it quietly, he thought, making the decision as he made his way to bed. His kindness coming to terms that he did not wish to humiliate her. The suffering he felt was unbearable but this is the right way in an impossible situation. Time to sleep.

Thankfully the Trail turned flat for a while and there was a temporary reprieve from the ascending path to Bethlehem. The weather this time of year could be hot and cold, almost at the same time. It was dusty and they were thirsty and tired. He again noticed the strange star in the sky that seems to be heading towards Bethlehem just as they were; it sparks another memory. “Joseph, son of David”, said the angel in his dream. He knew his tribe of course, but no one had ever called him son of David. Everything changed in that moment, though he understood very little of it. What does it mean that my wife has conceived of the Holy Spirit? The perplexing thought was quickly put to rest by what the angels said next, “you shall call his name Jesus.” Everything went silent and peaceful from that moment. I must do what the angel commanded, I must only trust

As they neared the city of David, a multitude of questions of how it would all come about began to emerge. Where can she deliver? What do we need? Who can help? The anxiety quickly left him though. He reminded himself what the angel said, “Do not fear”. The memory of those words calmed his spirit. We are almost there; the Baby is coming! All questions gave way to wonder as they rounded the final turn and Bethlehem could be seen from a short distance. He prepared himself to welcome his son, his Savior to the world. Awe overtook him as he suddenly realizing that God was really with them and he happened to be escorting Him into the city of His birth.

As we begin the Year of St. Joseph, all of us here at Annunciation Heights wish you a final blessing on the Trail to Bethlehem. The city is just around the corner. May the celebration of the Due Date be full of wonder and grace for you and yours. We can’t wait to see you next year!

In Christmas anticipation,
Kyle

Support Annunciation Heights with a Year-End Gift and Receive CO State Tax Credit

We have so much to be thankful for! On December 1, we celebrated our first ever Giving Day and together we raised over $14,000! That kind of generosity is incredible in and of itself. But it doesn't stop there. Because of a matching gift from an awesome benefactor, we were able to double the impact of each gift and in some cases triple it! Including the gift match, the AH community raised over $36,000! The best part is that, because we didn't raise the entire matching gift on Giving Day, our benefactor has allowed us to extend the match through the rest of December. That means we still have $28,000 available to match. If you didn't get a chance to donate on Giving Day, your end-of-year tithe will be doubled through the end of the month. Don't forget to look into our Childcare Tax Credit!

Thank you so much for your continued support. We are praying for you and your family.

Meet a Missionary:
Josie Riedell

Josie hails from the land that raised Ashton Kutcher and boasts more pigs than people-good ol’ “Hawkeye Iowa”. She enjoys generously dispersing hugs upon all, singing loudly, looking for birds, creating art and eating avocados and potatoes in any form. Quote a line from The Office or Parks and Rec to Josie and you’ll have a friend for life. She’ll be spending her mission year buried in books, playing with kids, climbing the mountains, and basking in Jesus’ love.

Josie’s favorite Bible story:
When Jesus asks Peter thrice: do you love me?

Josie’s favorite quote:
“Do not shine so that others can see you; shine so that through you others can see Him.” – CS Lewis
