Working in the Forest

Even amidst the unique times brought about by COVID-19, vast amounts of work is still being done here at Annunciation Heights and Camp St. Malo.  Our Altum Institute Missionaries, under the direction of staff Josh Marcantonio, have made vast progress in forest management and trail building.  Most especially, progress has been made on the new Stations of the Cross trail at Camp St. Malo.  Click here to learn more!

Director's Corner with
Executive Director, Kyle Mills

"What will 2021 hold?"  As we move into this New Year, and leave the stresses and uncertainties of 2020 behind, many of us may be asking ourself that very question.  "Lord, what do you have in store for us this year?"

When we ask ourselves this question, we can ask it in a number of different ways, coming from hearts predisposed to what we expect to occur.  The same words, said with different attitudes or tones, can mean totally different things - depending on whether are our hearts are full of hopeful anticipation or doubt!

We see this clearly displayed in the early infancy narratives in the Gospel of Luke.  When the angel Gabriel appears to Zechariah in the temple to announce the coming of their son after many years of infertility, Zechariah asks, "How shall I know this? For I am an old man, and my wife is advanced in years." (Lk 1:18)  Likewise, when the angel Gabriel appears to the Blessed Virgin Mary to announce the Incarnation of the Son of God in her womb, Mary asks similarly, "How shall this be, since I have no husband?" (Lk 1:34)  Both Zechariah and Mary ask strikingly similar questions.  Yet Zechariah is rebuked for his doubt and made mute, whereas Mary is reassured and comforted by the simple and awe-inspiring explanation.  A question, asked from a heart of faith, sounds very different than a question asked from a heart of anxiety and disbelief.

Here at camp, we also are asking ourselves the question about what 2021 will hold, but we are asking it with hearts full of expectant hope!  We look ahead to another year with more campers and family back on property!  We are excited to continue forming middle schoolers through our JPII Outdoor Lab faith and science programming both at schools and on property!  We are excited to bring on a new team of summer staff, energized to share the Gospel through their joyful witness to Christ's love!

There is so much to be grateful for and our hearts are full of hope!  As Mary said to the Gabriel, “Let it be done according to your word!”  See you at the Heights!

Trisha Thien

Trisha comes to the Rocky Mountains from the small town of Fort Recovery, Ohio. As a recent college graduate from Ball State University (Chirp Chirp!), she is beyond excited to encounter God’s beautiful creation, the awesome campers, and as many moose as she can find. You can most often find her listening to classic rock or movie soundtracks with a book, camera, or a piece of pizza in her hand.

Trisha’s favorite Bible story:
Jesus Walking on Water

Trisha’s favorite quote:
“Not all treasure is silver and gold, mate.” – Captain Jack Sparrow
